This week, I attended the Wayne State University College of Engineering Career Fair as a Freshman. Here are my takeaways: 1. Don't be afraid to talk to companies you haven't heard of. Going into this career fair, I only had time to look into a couple of the companies attending. This meant there were many companies I had never heard of. However, instead of completely avoiding these employers, I used this as an opportunity to learn more about them. I found many interesting companies I would've never discovered without talking to their associates during the hours I attended. 2. Build connections with peers. Everyone at a career fair is there for the same reason: a job. The career fair provides a chance to build connections with other driven students especially those who are going into a similar field. I met a fellow electrical and computer engineering student named James while waiting in line for BorgWarner. He spoke to me about his previous experience in an internship and the application process, and I even learned a little bit about his work on PCBs. 3. Just apply! As a freshman, the chances of getting a summer internship or co-op are lower than those who have already spent years gathering experience. With this in the back of my mind, I still put my best foot forward and used my experience to give myself a shot at these opportunities. Because of the career fair, I have found a list of companies to apply to and keep an eye out for in the future! My experience as a Freshman at the Wayne State University College of Engineering Career Fair gifted me with a better outlook on my professional path. I will be sure to take this outlook whilst applying for internships and a job in the future. P.S. If you have any tips, comments, or thoughts about career fairs, let me know!
