Does your partner know we are speaking today? Sounds scandalous but it is one of the first questions I ask of my candidates. There is no way I want them to be stealth shopping for a business. Business ownership is serious stuff and even if the partner is not going to be involved it does have an impact on them financially. Additionally, franchise systems want to know that both partners are on board with this decision and one is not going to put a stop to it at the last minute. Business ownership is risky enough as is and having the support of your partner can be very reassuring and helpful. More than 90% of businesses in the United States are family owned – hundreds of thousands of them franchises – but only 30% of them survive the retirement of the original owner.
