The Winship Cancer Institute at Emory Midtown boasts a one-of-a-kind architectural achievement: a massive circular window overhead, called an oculus. The Batson-Cook team faced unique challenges in designing and bringing this feature to life, from cost to fabrication to installation. To achieve this, the team partnered with Enclos Tensile Structures for a complete solution. They brought their expertise in designing, engineering, and building similar structures, like stadium roofs, to create the oculus using AESS trusses, a special fabric, and metal panels sublimated to look like wood. Batson-Cook secured the materials months in advance to avoid price escalation. Because the oculus is an elevated structure, the team could not use a mobile crane to set the trusses due to weight restrictions. To navigate this challenge, the trusses were each constructed in two large sections on the ground and then hoisted into place using two on site tower cranes and connected in the air while suspended. Together, the team was able to transform the patient drop-off area into an "urban room" – a bright, welcoming space that feels both connected to the outdoors and comfortable for patients. It also communicates to patients that the Winship Cancer Institute at Emory Midtown offers unparalleled care, and this stunning architectural feature reflects the team’s commitment to creating an exceptional patient experience. #batsoncook #ExperiencetheBCDifference
