WHAT DOES 'IT'S A GREAT/WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE' REALLY MEANS TO INTERNS ? The above is a very common phrase posted by students doing their internship in near-surface geophysics (NSG). More often than not, that particular phrase refers to their excitement on given the opportunity to handle the sophisticated geophysical equipment for the first time ! They are more fascinated with the equipment rather than learning the fundamentals of the geophysical methods. It's my cheeky self always poking them with questions when I encountered such posts. I'll comment and query them on some basic principles on the geophysical methods that they have been exposed to just to know how much they have learnt. It will always end up with silence and even to the extent of the posts being deleted. Internship is to prepare students for the real working life. They should be thoroughly guided to the basic principles of the geophysical methods. It's not only to demonstrate the use of the equipment. They should start from the basics before progressing to other work sequences. If they do not have a good grasp of the fundamentals of the methods, it's pointless to proceed further. Well, I don't totally blame them though. I believe it's the responsibilities of the company where they are attached to, to guide and teach them. These would help to prepare them well when they join the industry. As for the interns, they also need to be proactive by asking a lot of questions so that can they can learn as much as possible during their short stint undergoing their internship program. Do not waste your internship opportunity to build knowledge and skills prior to entering the job market.

Summer training serves as the experiential learning opportunity prior to graduation. It provides students with the chance to familiarize themselves with the field they will be working in after graduation, allowing them to train in a real work environment. Moreover, it enhances students' understanding of the theoretical knowledge they have studied in their specialization. It trains students to shoulder responsibilities and adhere to deadlines, while also teaching them how to interact with people outside the university environment, fostering respect for others' opinions. Furthermore, it equips students with the skills to face and overcome obstacles in the workplace, familiarizes them with the equipment and tools used in the industry, bridging the gap between academic learning and practical application. Summer training also offers institutions the opportunity to evaluate students' performance during the training period and assess how they have benefited from it, potentially leading to employment opportunities post-graduation. “I feel like I have learned way more about geology and what I want to do in my career, in the three months that I’ve been doing this program, compared to the entire year of uni,” says Ricki, an Intern Student and Indigenous Cadet in our exploration (RTX) team in Brisbane, Australia. I had no idea I was going to get in. But my friend and I signed up for it and took the opportunity. It's a really good program - I work with the RTX team at Bowen Hills (in Brisbane, Australia). The teams are really lovely, enthusiastic people, and they're so good to work with and learn from. We are given a main project to work on throughout three months, and then a few other side projects. At the moment, I'm doing some geochemistry and tectonic reconstruction. So that's been really interesting and I've learned so much. There's many RTX stations around the world that all focus on different parts of the globe - researching different types of geology, commodities, and deposits. Rio Tinto is very organised, and they don’t treat you as a number, you're definitely more of an individual - people want to listen to you and teach you things, and you’re supported all the way. I feel like in a lot of graduate and vacation roles elsewhere, they kind of throw you out into a mine or an office and leave you to it - you don't really get to learn much. But I feel like Rio Tinto is definitely more interested in getting the next generation ready for mining and exploration geology. Applying is definitely scary. I didn’t know anyone in Brisbane, but I don’t regret it at all. It's such a great opportunity. And it's made me become much more confident in myself, as well as what I want to do for my career. While I'm young, I do want to go out and try FIFO (fly-in fly-out), so I can learn how the mines function, before I get into exploration geology, but I’d definitely be honored to stick with Rio Tinto." I'm happy to share that I've recently completed an enriching internship at the National Atmospheric Research Laboratory. Over the past few months, I've had the privilege to explore the Direction-of-Arrival (DOA) Estimation for Lightning Signals using Interferometry. While at NARL, I've worked on the complexities of signal processing and atmospheric sciences. Focusing on lightning signals has broadened my understanding of this natural phenomenon and equipped me with invaluable data analysis and interpretation skills. One of the most rewarding aspects of my internship was the meeting people with challenging research projects within atmospheric sciences. Each project presented unique challenges and learning opportunities, from studying the Martian ionosphere to investigating cloud bursts. Meeting passionate researchers has expanded my knowledge base and fueled my curiosity to explore further in this dynamic field. I'm incredibly grateful for the hands-on experience and mentorship I received at NARL. It has been a journey of growth and discovery, allowing me to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios and develop practical solutions. Reflecting on my internship experience, I'm filled with a sense of accomplishment and excitement for the future. I look forward to apply the skills and insights gained at NARL to contribute meaningfully to the field of atmospheric sciences and related fields. In such cases, seeking training independently is a viable solution. This can be done by: Exploring internship opportunities in companies through their websites. Many companies post internship openings directly on their websites, often recurring annually. Engaging directly with company representatives on LinkedIn. Typically, the required documents include proof of enrollment from the college, obtainable from student affairs, and a CV. While a strong CV is not necessarily required for internships, it demonstrates your interest and activity in the field, which can be evidenced through extracurricular activities and a good academic record.
