No one should have to work for free to jump-start their career. Labor is labor and time is money, literally. But the truth is, exploitation has always happened and will keep on happening. Whether or not you join that unpaid internship depends on how privileged you are - privileged to afford to spend unpaid time vs doing any job that you NEED to pay your bills and have no other options. I know some people that had to take long detours because they couldn't afford to work for free. [One step at a time] 👣One step at a time is a series showcasing the challenges Jolen's young team members face during their internship, and how they turn it around into valuable learning experience. Today, let's hear from Thu Trang who's recently graduated from her 3-month internship at Jolen. ❓ What are the obstacles and lessons have you garnered through the internship? 🔹Reflecting on my internship at Jolen, there are two key challenges that stood out: paying attention to details and managing expectations with relevant stakeholders. 1. Paying attention to details In such a fast-paced environment, I quickly realised how even small mistakes could escalate into larger problems. To tackle this, I developed a system of creating checklists for every task. I would break each project into specific steps — reviewing data from column A to column C, checking the accuracy of content, and ensuring that visuals aligned with the overall message. Gradually, I made it a habit to double-check and even triple-check everything. This method not only helped me stay organised but also gave me the confidence that I was delivering high-quality work. Over time, this simple practice made a significant difference and greatly reduced my errors. 2. Managing expectation Another significant challenge was managing expectation, especially when working with clients or colleagues. Miscommunication could easily lead to frustration, so I quickly learned that ensuring everyone was on the same page from the outset was essential. To address this, I made it a priority to clearly communicate my understanding of the project from the beginning, while also listening carefully to others to ensure alignment. If anything changed along the way, I would communicate those changes immediately to keep everyone informed. This proactive approach helped build trust with stakeholders and fostered smoother collaborations. These two challenges became invaluable learning experiences for me. They not only taught me to be more organised and precise, but also transformed me into a better communicator.
