👋 Network: Did you know that half a million people in Switzerland are affected by a rare disease? A disease is considered rare if it affects no more than 5 in 10,000 people. However, this seemingly small number adds up due to the large number of rare diseases. There are currently 7,000 to 8,000 known rare diseases worldwide, affecting approximately 300 million people. This represents approximately 7% of the world's population. The diversity of these diseases and the lack of awareness about them make it difficult for those affected to get a diagnosis and targeted treatment. At Obatala Sciences, we are working to make a difference in metabolic disease research through our #MPS models. #Diabetes is a growing problem in the US with over 37.1 million adults aged 18 years or older (14.7% of all US adults) suffering from the disease in 2019 as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Furthermore, the prevalence of diabetes is expected to rise exponentially in the next 20 years. #researchanddevelopment
