Case Study – Danish manufacturing company urgently needed a local HR Manager in China Overview: A leading Danish manufacturing company, operating globally with sales and production units in China, faced critical challenges in its HR function. With a large organization in China with approximately 1,500 employees, the need for an efficient HR function was vital to ensure compliance and internal standards. Due to the restrictions by the Covid-19 pandemic, the company needed to quickly find a local solution to fill the competence and leadership need. Challenge: The company was transitioning from a sector-based to a regional/geographically oriented organizational model. The Chinese operations, encompassing production and sales units, required immediate attention to establish effective structures and processes for a compliant HR function. The inability to deploy someone from the global organization due to pandemic restrictions intensified the challenge. Solution: In response to the urgent need, the company reached out to Nordic Interim DK. In cooperation with a partner on the Chinese market, three highly qualified Chinese candidates, proficient in international HR management and HR systems, were identified within two days. These candidates all had the ability to assess, establish, and enhance structures, systems, and processes. Following two days of client-candidate dialogues, the company conducted interviews and selected an interim HR Manager. A formal agreement was signed within one week of the initial contact with Nordic Interim Denmark. #interimmanagement #casestudy #china

After the finale of the HR Managers Programme, I finally caught up with Cindy Khoo and Edwin Chua. Cindy was my Deputy Secretary and has been a key advisor on both career and life matters. At a personal level, we shared similar taste in music - from JJ Lin (her not so much me) to Stef Sun, having grown up in the same era. I first met Edwin when he was a young officer. We worked together on the Youth Olympic Games (YOG), and even though he's younger than me, our paths crossed again as we both transitioned into HR. Edwin went to Many Productive People Department, and I moved to the central Public Service Division. Edwin was in Cindy's team in MOE. This catch-up was long overdue. We had so much to share about our lives and careers. Cindy is now 100 days into her tenure as Managing Director of Enterprise Singapore, Edwin is a Commander, and I am gradually finding my stride in PSD, pushing for Competency-Driven Growth in the Service. Besides the laughter, what stood out during our conversation was our shared values and belief in the work we do in the Public Service. We talked about the importance of team compatibility (including leaders) and how essential it is for team members to be on the same wavelength. While personalities can be different, chemistry and positive vibes are crucial for a cohesive and productive working environment. There is a certain compatibility between Cindy, Edwin, and me that I deeply value, and it makes me hopeful that one day we might have the chance to work together again. Really, as with all productive networking/catch-up dinners, I am reminded of the significance of the importance of having aligned values and mutual respect in professional lives. Happy International HR Day Eunice Kabahikyeho, To all the HR professionals around the world who are the glue to organisational sucusces. I am proud to be one of them. Over the last 15 years, I took the decision to pursue a course in organisational studies and communication skills and later a master's in Human Resource Management, little did I know that it would position me to be at the center of people management and organization development Along this journey I was privileged to be mentored by some of the best in this industry. Eunice Kabahikyeho, now Chief People Officer at Strong Minds, implementing HR in practical terms was only made possible when I I had opportunity to work with her at SOS Children's Villages Uganda. I met the best boss I am proud of to this day, she remains my mentor to date . She allowed me to make mistakes, innovate, she challenged me to think outside the box about solutions to issues ie what do you think about this problem and how to do think we can solve it before she gives you her solutions. I learnt to write good letters from her. I remember when I joined, she would tell me, Teo please draft this letter regarding this and that. I would draft, print and take to her to review, she would cross, rewrite in the same paper and tell me to correct it. I used to keep all those corrections. when she would re- assign me to draft new letters, I would go back to all those corrections to ensure that I don't make similar mistakes. She was very practical in her mentorship. We talked about many things, she was very approachable and made it easy to walk to her and ask anything. I am where I am today because she walked me along key HR processes and laid the right foundation. I was open to learning and I often dreaded those red crossings and put a lot of effort in making my work neat and better every time. she reinforced me positively even when I didn't do certain things right, she would start with what I did very well and say next time...this would work better if you approached it this. I often wonder; 1. How many young people have missed opportunity to grow in their profession because they got the wrong mentors at the start of their career? 2. How many have missed opportunities to grow because they were never ready and willing to be corrected? 3. How many missed opportunity learn because they were not challenged enough, or given opportunity to make mistakes? 4. How many have left a career because the foundation was not given the right support to nature it grow? We all have different experiences along our career journeys, often the ones that make it are those that had the support of their managers or their managers treated them so badly that they vowed to be better than them. I am blessed to have had Eunice and many others like Faye Ekong, Managing Director, Ravel Works Africa.
