BACK ON THE HIGH SEAS – NEW LIFE FOR AN OLD FRIEND! Through our long-standing partnership with SLB, Bauer Kompressoren UK Limited has recently embarked on a joint programme to upgrade the control panels of SLB’s high pressure seismic package fleet. Deployed across the globe in the exploration sector, these DNV containerised systems employ a diesel engine driven BAUER K28.0 compressor to provide a reliable source of high pressure air under the most demanding environmental conditions. The bespoke integrated control panel governs the operation of both the engine and compressor, also performing vital safety related trips. Following a full service and control panel upgrade, the seismic package, built at Bauer UK’s St. Helens facility in 2009, is now ready for another fifteen years of reliable service on the high seas.

🚢 Another new XL cable-laying vessel heading to the market. There is more good news on the installation vessel front as Jan De Nul Group confirms its order of a second XL cable-laying vessel. The CAPE VLT-640 was successfully used to install 111 out of 219 jacket pin piles with a diameter up to 3.5 meter and a maximum length of 93.3 meter for phase one of the Hai Long Offshore Wind Farm in Taiwanese waters. In 2025 the second phase will start around March 2025 to install the remaining piles. The Green Jade, Taiwan’s first 4,000t crane vessel with DP capabilities, of CDWE was used for the project. 12 piles, stacked in 3 layers, were taken on the deck to install 4 jacket locations per trip. Main reason to choose for using the CAPE VLT was to prevent pile run. However, the efficiency of using the CAPE VLT was proven during the project as well, with the quickest time of 7 minutes to drive one of the pin piles up to 35m penetration depth. 🌊 The future of German shipyards lies in innovation and strategic focus. Partner Dr Christian Finnern recently spoke with Lloyd's List about the challenges and opportunities for the German shipbuilding industry. One key takeaway is that offshore converter platforms (OCPs) could serve as a lifeline for shipyards facing difficulties, offering new avenues for growth and development. As renewable energy gains momentum, maritime infrastructure, such as OCPs, becomes increasingly vital. German shipyards are uniquely positioned to contribute to this transformation, particularly in light of Germany’s ambitious goal to install significant offshore wind capacity by 2045. Plans for up to 30 offshore wind farms, each with investments of approximately $2.5 billion, present substantial potential for local shipyards. Beyond economic benefits, producing OCPs closer to deployment sites rather than importing them from distant regions could also streamline processes and reduce logistical complexities. CDWE’s Green Jade, Taiwan’s first 4,000t crane vessel with DP capabilities, was used for the project. The main reason for choosing for the CAPE VLT was to prevent pile run. However, the efficiency of using the CAPE VLT was proven during the project as well, with the quickest driving time of just 7 minutes for one of the piles to 35m penetration depth.
