It is an early example of French lithography in maps. The map has a circular title cartouche with a 'remarks' box below it. Between vibrant red and calming blue lies purple — a colour synonymous with royalty. The colour purple has an opulent history of being one of the most sought after colours. It has strong roots in mythology, piety, art and royalty. The reason for purple's regal reputation comes down to a simple case of supply and demand (Art and Collections). The most prized purple dye came from the coastal city of Tyre in what is now Lebanon. The Greeks called this region "Phoenicia," which was a name that is believed to mean "land of purple." The colour purple was extraordinarily expensive and tedious to make. In Rome, during the 1st century CE a pound of Tyrian purple dye cost about half a Roman soldier's annual salary! (University of Michigan) In line with the history of the colour purple, purple diamonds today are still rare and exclusive. They owe their regal purple hue to post-growth plastic deformation in the earth.
