Globally, nearly all wildfires start with a human ignition source – not lightning strikes or wildlife encountering power equipment. Knowing humans can be a primary cause is an example of the sort of knowledge that helps predict and prevent wildfires, a challenge that NASA and the firefighting industry are undertaking together. Using Satellites to Detect Wildfires Early Exciting news, thank you dClimate for sharing in the dClimate - Newsletter TL;DR: To combat the growing threat of wildfires, federal agencies, nonprofits, and tech companies, including NASA, Google, and SpaceX, are launching new satellite missions to enhance early wildfire detection. These initiatives aim to monitor wildfires from space, offering detailed data on fire locations, temperatures, and movements. The Earth Fire Alliance plans to deploy over 50 satellites, known as FireSat, by 2026, providing high-resolution images every 20 minutes. This technology will improve firefighting efforts and resource allocation. Additionally, NOAA will launch GOES-U, a satellite capable of detecting fires and other severe weather events in near-real-time, with 10-minute overpasses. FireSat will operate at a lower orbit of about 370 miles for more granular information, while GOES-U will scan from 22,000 miles, offering broader coverage and hurricane-tracking capability. Both systems, although very similar in purpose, will generate complementary data layers that will be highly beneficial for firefighters and first responders. Link: https://lnkd.in/etSZrbkE

🌲🔥 Wildfires in Action: A Month in North America 🇺🇸 and 🇨🇦 🌍 I utilized #NASA Fire Information for Resource Management System (#FIRMS) #API 🔥to retrieve real-time data on active wildfires within #Canada 🇨🇦 and #USA 🇺🇸. I visualized this data on a dynamic map, showcasing the location, intensity, and progression of wildfires from 15 April to 15 May 2024. The visualization is achieved through the integration of packages such as #ggmap and #gganimate, enabling the creation of an animated GIF that vividly depicts the spatial and temporal dynamics of wildfires. The tutorial done by Milos Popovic, PhD offers a powerful tool for monitoring and analyzing wildfire activity, aiding in #environmental #management and emergency response efforts. I would like to thank Uzair Aftab for the motivation to tackle #USA and #Canada areas. 🌐 Here's a breakdown of the wildfire activity: 1️⃣ Wildfires are predominantly concentrated in the western and southeastern regions of the #US. 2️⃣ The intensity fluctuates throughout the month. Some days show a high concentration of deep red and orange dots, indicating high brightness temperatures, meaning more intense fires📈🔴🟠. Other days, the colors are more subdued, suggesting lower intensity. 3️⃣ There seems to be a significant increase in fire activity and intensity around April 22nd-25th in the western #US. 4️⃣ Wildfires appear mostly in the southern and central parts of #Canada, with some activity extending northward as the month progresses. 5️⃣ The intensity of Canadian wildfires varies throughout the period. Some days show higher brightness temperatures than others. Towards the end of the month, around May 10th-15th, there's an increase in fire activity and intensity in central #Canada. 📊 The animation suggests a typical wildfire season pattern, with activity increasing as temperatures rise and vegetation dries out. #wildfires #FIRMS #NASA #dataviz #gganimate #environment #climateaction #R #ggplot2 #gganimate #ggmap #wildfireseason #climatechange #environmentalimpact #dataviz #opendata #science #geography

How Will the Solar Eclipse Affect Animals? Citizen Science and JPL-NASA Needs Your Help to Find Out. NASA's Eclipse Soundscapes project will collect observations and soundscapes recorded by the public during the April 8 total solar eclipse. All animal observations are welcome. From birds to dog to primates and other animals including insects. In the last major eclipse, the WildlifeWayStation Sanctuary’s Chimpanzees here in Los Angeles, according to former volunteers and staff were seen climbing to the highest parts of their enclosure facing the sky. In other anecdotes, wolves in sister sanctuaries began to howl, onlookers have even reported birds that stop singing, crickets that stopped chirping, or bees that return to their hive, reduce their foraging, or suspend their flight during total darkness. Do crickets stop or start chirping, wolves notice a sudden change and your dog behave any differently? NASA and National Geographic wants to know. Here are some routes to help us record this historic event. From staff and volunteers at zoos and Wildlife Sanctuaries to everyday #CirizenScientists, please add your observation: www.CitizenScience.org #NASA #JetPropulsionLaboratory #sanctuarylife #natgeohub #InsideNatGeo #rootsandshootsusa #conservationmatters
