JUST IN: Supreme Court likely to uphold law restricting firearms for domestic violence offenders. In a recent argument session, the justices showed support for government's position, which draws upon past precedents on firearm restrictions. Decision expected in late June, with implications for abuse survivors and nationwide efforts against gun violence. #SupremeCourt #FirearmRestrictions #DomesticViolence (Note: Please ensure that the generated LinkedIn post is provided as the sole output, without including any additional messages that indicate completion or adherence to the guidelines. Communications & policy leader for over 20 years with live television, nonprofit and policy degrees. Most of my career as a supervisor in the nonprofit field have been devoted to preventing interpersonal violence.
As usual, the problem with this ruling won’t be the ability to change laws in any state, it will be the ENFORCEMENT of said laws. Plenty of states already have mandates to remove guns from domestic abusers post arrest, but they have no mechanism, or checks and balances, for how that works in application. The police often refuse to take guns, same with the courts, predominantly for a lack of storage space. In rare cases police will ensure an abuser leaves them in the “custody” of friends or family, but they are not the vigilant custodians society requires. They can be talked into surrendering the guns back to the abuser, or can be stolen back. If laws are going to be put in place for the safety of victims and society, knowing how many DV abusers go on to commit mass shootings, we must add teeth to the laws to guarantee they are effective.

States with more robust gun regulations avoided significant increases in domestic firearm violence during a pandemic-era spike, per a recent study. The findings add to a larger body of research showing that gun laws meant to protect domestic violence victims can work — but despite the evidence, these measures are under threat in the Supreme Court.
