This morning, I had the pleasure of joining Lindsey Boyer, South Valley Services' executive director, on ABC 4's Good Things Utah to discuss Domestic Violence Awareness Month. We talked about the importance of recognizing green flags and red flags in relationships. Remember, abuse is about power and control while healthy relationships are based on equality, respect, and mutual decision making. Let's continue to spread awareness and work towards ending domestic violence. #DomesticViolenceAwarenessMonth https://lnkd.in/gHZh9pqR

After a hiatus of 9 months from LinkedIn, I did not expect to find myself returning to the platform in shock of what had occurred yesterday in Dublin City, my home town, nor did I expect this to be my first post since transitioning from policing to the regulatory field. That said, as the lead for the 'Safe Haven' Interfaith Hate & Extremism Response Project, I was asked by The Dublin City Interfaith Forum, to re-publish this statement on their behalf: 'Dublin City Interfaith Forum is shocked by the horrendous attack on our young children and adults outside the Gael Scoil Mhuire in the centre of our City. Our deepest thoughts and prayers are with the three children and the woman who were viciously attacked in Dublin yesterday, the other people who have been injured, their families and the teachers and staff at the school. We are grateful to the members of An Garda Síochána, other emergency services and members of the public who put themselves in harm’s way to professionally and proportionately respond to the uncontrolled violence and thuggery that erupted after the horrific attack. What we saw unfold last night was orchestrated public disorder stoked by hate and far-right rhetoric online and on our streets. The attacks on emergency service personnel and vehicles, the burning of Garda cars and public transport, the looting of department stores and the damage to retail premises deserves condemnation. We strongly condemn those people and groups clearly set to sow hatred and division in our community. We stand by all those who hold the rule of law and democracy and we ask, at this difficult time to reflect on how we can heal the scars left from the events of last night. We ask people to treasure the diversity of our city. This is a diversity that stretches back to its very founding. The question before us is how we may help one another, understand one another and learn from one another as we share this vibrant city as our home. Let us collectively find a way to address and to move on from the hate-filled rhetoric and actions of those last night to a shared aspiration of making Dublin a welcoming city, a city of kindness. More than ever, we need to stand with our diverse communities. Dublin City Interfaith Forum pledges to do everything possible to offer assistance. We ask any of those directly impacted by the violence and hate-filled actions of last night to report such hate incidents to An Garda Síochána, or independently through our Safe Haven project for responding to hate and extremism.' #dublin #violence #peace #riots #interfaith #extremism #hatecrimes The Dublin City Interfaith Forum Adrian Cristea

Domestic violence is a pattern of behavior that includes the use of threats of violence and intimidation for the purpose of gaining power and control over another person. It can happen to anyone anywhere regardless of race, education, religion, gender, etc. An abuser’s behavior can include controlling behavior, jealousy and possessiveness, aggressive behavior, and blaming others. The behavior towards a child may be humiliating or constantly criticising the child; threatening and shouting at a child or calling them names; making the child the subject of jokes, or using sarcasm to hurt a child; or blaming and scapegoating a child. Please reach out to the many organizations in your City for help right away if anyone believes they may be experiencing abusive behavior. If you do not know where to call in your City, please contact the following: MINNESOTA DAY ONE® A statewide program of Cornerstone Advocacy Services, Day One® works to ensure that no call for help goes unanswered so that all in need can find safety and support. Day One connects people to experiencing domestic violence, sexual violence, human trafficking or general crime to help at agencies throughout the state. To learn more, please Call: 1.866.223.1111; Text: 612.399.9995. On an emergency, please always call 911. Though October is nationally recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DAVM), let’s all be aware of these grievous acts of violence every month, every week, every day, every minute and every seconds. The data from National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) Statistics state that “on average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. During one year, this equates to more than 10 million women and men.” Check the various websites to know how to identify those who are being abused. Something to ponder about: Am I able to identify if someone is being abused? If unsure, talk to someone to help figure this out. From my experience, some victims may be comfortable where they are. Infact, most abusers have their ways (depriving access to funds, buying their victims gifts, constantly telling their victims that they will change, threatening their victims’ lives, abusers pretend to be going counseling, etc.) of holding their victims hostage. YOU MAY BE SAVING A LIFE. What are the behaviors that we see in our homes that we joke about, because of our ignorant to signs of an abuse, not knowing that they are damaging. How can you help in encouraging or creating a healthy community in my neighborhood? What can we all, collectively, do to help in decreasing the numbers on NVACS statistics? What can you do to help in bringing abusers to justice? I know from my work experience that lots of help are needed. You can help by donating to increasing funds of domestic violence agencies. Please call the number above for more information, or call the agencies in your community. Thank you for your help.

It's a startling truth: 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men are victims of domestic violence, according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. These statistics underline the harsh reality that domestic violence affects individuals from all walks of life. This issue is not a private matter; it's a pervasive problem with far-reaching consequences for survivors, their families, and communities. We are working to raise awareness and support survivors in our community – but we can’t do it alone. Collectively, we can work towards breaking the cycle of silence and stigma surrounding this issue.
