In his latest article, Jason Wilen, AIA, CDT, RRO addresses the urgent need to revise building codes for low-slope commercial roofs, especially after the damage caused by Hurricane Ian. He points out that despite stricter building codes, challenges remain in achieving effective roof performance. The article emphasizes the conflict between current stringent requirements and the practicalities of sustainable and energy-efficient roofing. Wilen suggests that building codes should be more flexible and adaptable to better meet the needs of building owners and the environment. Director, Emergency Management Mitigation, Insurance and Resilient Communities Office at Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency
May is Building Safety Month! Building codes and the officials who enforce them are making the Nation’s families and communities safer and more resilient. As we head into hurricane season, FEMA’s Region 3 is joining the national campaign for building Safety in May. Homes and buildings that are built (and maintained) in compliance with the current natural hazard-resistant building codes result in resilient structures that minimize the risks of death, injury, and property damage. As we continue to face disastrous weather events, building safety is even more important. Building safety affects everyone, and current building codes save lives. Awareness is key. Join us in the Year of Resilience and spread the messages about the importance and cost-effectiveness of building safety. The weekly themes for this year's campaign are: Week One (May 1–4): Understanding the Mission Week Two (May 5—11): Preparing a Building Safety Plan Week Three (May 12—18): Learning from the Pros Week Four (May 19—25): Engaging Your Community Week Five (May 26—31): Celebrating Success in Building Safety Info on each week's theme may be found at: https://lnkd.in/emfr-SYB

Following the extensive flood damage from Hurricanes Ian and Nicole, the property owners of a beach resort were looking to strengthen the building from future storms. They wanted a solution that was easy to deploy and could protect key points of the structure, such as the electrical room and parking garage. After a consultation with Floodproofing.com, it was decided that FRA Flood Panels were the ideal solution for this project. FRA Panels are quick and easy to deploy and don’t require any tools. Because our custom flood panels can be shaped and contoured to meet job-specific demands, every key point of the property is now well protected, including the louver vents, which need space to allow airflow.
