From CPA Trendlines: New Comment on The Slow, Painful Death of the 150-Hour Rule by Lillian Gonzalez: I entered this profession before the hour requirement was passed, two accounting courses and 3 years experience and I passed the CPA exam. Started my own firm and now have 14 staff. Some of my senior staff have accounting degrees some do not. What I can say, all those senior staff members can prepare returns and perform audits with great competency. Given the opportunity and a little study, I believe most could pass the CPA exam. What I’ve found that even those with accounting degrees come out of college not knowing what a debit or a credit is. For the most part, college courses teach theory, practical experience provides the learning necessary in applying that theory. The CPA exam, until recently, only tested theory. and most of that theory is not useful for those working in mid to smaller size firms. The new Core testing on the exam is great because you can utilize skills learned in a practice area. Providing alternatives to becoming a CPA would not necessarily dilute the status of our profession. It is a pathway for those with the knowledge but not necessarily the paper (or the student loan debt) to advance their careers, would provide a greater pool of candidates and would definitely be more enticing to those considering becoming CPA’s. http://dlvr.it/TFT3ts #reader #feedback #buzz
