A great channel for #advocating about HLP in crisis contexts Join on May 16-17, 2024 at Howard University for the 2nd annual #Conference on Housing, Land, and Property (#HLP) Rights in #Crisis Contexts to engage in critical discussions, learn from experts, and build collaborative networks across sectors. Housing, Land, and Property (HLP) rights encompass a comprehensive range of entitlements to housing, land, and property according to statutory law, customary law, or informal arrangements. These rights are fundamental to ensuring individuals have a secure home, free from the threat of involuntary eviction. HLP rights underpin an individual's capacity to maintain livelihoods and access vital services. Disputes over #land and #property are often the main drivers of crises and are a consequence of conflict. #HLP rights issues arise in all crisis contexts and at every stage of response. When internally displaced persons (#IDPs) and #refugees are displaced, they are forced to leave their homes and land without certainty about their future residence or possibility of #return. HLP challenges can lead to violations of other people’s HLP rights and leave displaced populations #vulnerable to homelessness, violence, and secondary #displacement. Crisis contexts can expose the inherent weaknesses and inequalities of pre-existing #HLP systems. In both conflict and disasters, HLP issues need to be addressed to avoid harming, reduce vulnerability, and enable durable recovery. Resolving HLP issues can reduce local environmental degradation, mitigate the effects of climate change, and support #peacebuilding and #reconstruction. Part of my dissertation looks at why federal agencies respond differently to the mandate for tribal consultation in rulemaking (EO13175). Through many interviews with advocates, tribal leaders and federal employees, and a lot of data analysis, I learned that tribes are burdened with varied, simultaneous requests for consultation, many that arrive late or get stuck in spam filters. It's burdensome to sift through all of the agency requests and then prepare impactful comments and remarks for these consultation opportunities. Based on the advice I received, I proposed a solution to MIT Solve during their Indigenous Communities Challenge. As designers, developers, we don’t always show appreciation or share inspiration unless it’s our own stuff. So, every so often, I’m going share things I’ve found or made, that are pinicle features that we should aspire to. And I’ll try break it down too. First up, is www.valmont.com by Resn. The highlight is the multiple videos tied to user scroll, with the masking between sections, is too good! At first I thought the hero section was an Apple style image sequence, an old technique they used a few times. But it’s actually done in the best way, by putting a video in canvas, using gsap to attach mouse scroll to the scrub of the video. I believe it’s added into canvas for performance and browser support, but it’s such a sweet technique! There are quite a few features on this site that are stunning and feel great, but that hero section and image quality is just 🔥🔥🔥
