Does joining the tennis federation help or hinder the development of padel? All around the world, we’re seeing different examples of federation setup in relation to padel. There are many cases where the federation is setup separately from tennis as an independent body and many where it comes under the tennis federation, and there can be pluses and minuses to both sides. The advantage of having the two sports setup separately is that you have a dedicated padel team only focused on developing the game - including performance, tournaments, education and everything that goes around building the sport. However, it is harder to build awareness and get government representation. Being a part of a Tennis Federation can be great because it builds awareness of the sport within the tennis community and it makes it easier for tennis clubs to add padel facilities and padel courts as part of the facilities. The downside of that is that many federations consider padel a smaller part of tennis and don't consider it its own sport. Therefore, the federations don't give it the kind of push that it needs, or the dedication and representation that it needs. My views are that it really depends on the situation, the organisation of the federation and the development of the sports (both tennis and padel)... LTA – the governing body for tennis and padel – has launched its new strategy for padel in Britain, with a vision to open the sport up to more people across the country and with an ambition to grow the sport by making it more accessible, welcoming, enjoyable and inspiring. The strategy, which covers the period from 2024 to 2029, maintains the LTA’s focus on growing the infrastructure of padel, increasing and diversifying the coaching workforce and building on the performance pathway as well as increasing visibility and driving participation. It is estimated that the number of padel courts in the UK has increased from around 50 in 2019 to more than 400 this year (2024).
