Yet capacity is not the biggest problem: it is possible to produce enough food to feed the growing global population. While progress has been made in reducing malnutrition and poverty, challenges like hunger, obesity, and environmental damage persist. 🌱💰   Food systems are a nexus of triumphs and challenges, feeding a doubled world population since the 1970s.   Yet, unaccounted costs are staggering – 15 trillion USD yearly, 12% of 2020 GDP!   🏥 Health costs at 11 trillion USD include productivity impacts of non-communicable diseases like diabetes & cancer linked to food. Obesity affects 770 million, undernutrition 735 million.   🌿 Environmental costs at 3 trillion USD reflect food systems' negative impacts on ecosystems, climate, greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, and biodiversity loss.   💸 Structural poverty arises from food costs and low incomes in food production, impacting agriculture disproportionately.   🔥 Global food system on an unsustainable path; current policies insufficient. Even if nations meet policy commitments, emissions will still rise, leading to a 2.7°C temperature increase by 2100.   🍽️ Current trends lead to more food insecurity, obesity, food waste, and vulnerability to climate change. Deforestation and nitrogen surplus pose further risks. 🌎   💡 Transforming food systems offers a unique chance to address climate, nature, and health crises while improving livelihoods worldwide. SDG 2 seeks to end hunger, achieve #foodsecurity, improve nutrition and promote #sustainableagriculture . The world is currently not on track to achieve SDG 2. #Climatechange has reduced food security, hindering efforts to meet the #SDGs. Projections estimate that nearly 670 million people may still face hunger in 2030, in part due to more frequent and intense extreme weather events that are disrupting each pillar of food security (availability, access, utilization and stability). To effectively support the achievement of #SDG2 , global investments are needed in weather-, climate- and water-related sciences and services along agrifood value chains. Geopolitics intersects with food security and nutrition in remarkable ways and impacts lives. As the world navigates geopolitical challenges, from trade dynamics to climate change impacts, the accessibility and quality of food are often at stake. Over 280 million people faced high levels of acute food insecurity in 59 food-crisis countries and territories in the world, according to the 2023 Global Report on Food Crises. Today, our CEO, Paul Newnham joined Martin Bloem and Beatriz Romanos Hernando at the Food Changemakers Summit in #Valencia, Spain to speak on why we must ensure food security goes beyond production and leverage on innovation and storytelling to promote equality, climate resilience, and policy coherence.
