Google IO to Set AI Bar: Google IO and the Pixel 9s represent a perfect opportunity for Google's almost decades-long Tensor smartphone development to shine. While we believe the Pixel 9s will break new ground in smartphone AI utility, we want to understand how Google will balance its Android OS goals with exclusive Pixel innovations, which could harm Samsung. Either way, with AI expectations increasing, Google IO on May 15th will set the bar for Android AI innovation, and Apple will have to try to respond during WWDC in early June. The rest of Q2 is going to be an exciting time for tech enthusiasts! AT&T Q1 Results Will Offer Key Insights Into Shift to 36-month Financing: 1Q24 will mark the first full quarter of potential delayed upgrades from AT&T's transition from 30-month to 36-month financing. While we anticipate only a slight y/y decline (1-3%) in sales given numerous factors, such as the earlier S24 launch and generous promotions, there is a potential for a more significant 5-10% y/y decline. We believe larger declines are less likely due to the broader trend of device elongation, which indicates consumers, on average, are waiting longer than 40 months to upgrade. AT&T's results will also provide valuable insights into Verizon's shift to 36-month financing, which is expected to impact premium smartphone sales starting in August 2024 and will notably affect the Verizon iPhone 16 launch.

As a tech-lover I watched today’s Samsung event. The presentation showcased some interesting innovations, though nothing truly groundbreaking. But the key point taken is not about the AI features announced or its capabilities. It clearly showed that it is currently the most important topic for phone manufacturers. Collaboration with Google on Android AI-based features and roumors about Apple making massive investments into their own AI development indicates that this will be the hottest topic for this year and probably in the nearest future. What’s the next step? Let’s wait and see what Apple and Google have prepared for their products and how will it impact our daily smartphone usage. With Google’s I/O coming around May/June and Apple’s WWDC coming in the latter, we might hear event more interesting tech news for the smartphone market.

New Smartphone Season: Is Innovation Outpacing Demand? The latest smartphone season is in full swing, with dazzling launches from Google, Apple, Samsung Electronics, and Huawei. But amid maturing sales and a growing desire for 'digital sobriety,' is the industry losing touch with consumer needs? My colleague Ben Wood recently gave his views to the BBC regarding the latest smartphone releases. In the article, Ben notes that while AI features are impressive, consumers tend to prioritise practicalities like camera quality. He also shares insight into the rising trend of 'feature phones,' offering a simpler, less addictive experience. Many consumers are "holding on to their phones for longer," as the cost-of-living crisis and environmental concerns influence their spending decisions. This shift is evident in the growing popularity of feature phones, which offer a more sustainable and focused alternative to high-end smartphones. Feature phones are typically smaller, lighter, and more affordable than smartphones, and they often have a longer battery life. They also lack many of the features that can be distracting or addictive, such as social media apps, games, and video streaming. CCS Insight research predicts that around 400,000 feature phones will be sold in the UK this year, demonstrating a growing demand for simpler, more affordable devices. Innovation is essential for driving progress and staying competitive in the fast-paced tech industry. However, it's equally important to listen to consumer needs and address their growing concerns about digital well-being and sustainability. By striking a balance between innovation and consumer-centricity, the smartphone industry can not only meet the demands of today's market but also shape a more sustainable and meaningful future for connected devices. Read the full article to explore this fascinating topic further. https://lnkd.in/eY_9hAVV #SmartphoneSeason #DigitalWellbeing #ConsumerTrends #CCSInsight #InnovationVsNecessity

So Apple is in talks with Google to explore if Gemini AI can be used to power iPhone AI features. I wonder how fanboys/fangirls of the iPhone vs Android debate will spin this. Meanwhile, this partnership if it happens can definitely reshape the smartphone industry and the kinds of technology we will see emerge. Purely as a person following tech, how Apple implements Gemini and the nature of the way it innovates around it will be fun to watch. I’m hoping to see how they diverge from how Android players will develop around Gemini and how the two approaches will create a host of new offerings for customers. Somewhere, I am sure there are those iPhone fans wondering what will happen to their beloved Siri as Android fans will be, “Hey Google, we’re the boss”. There’s also the ecosystem integration, which will be great to see – how Apple, with its well-established ecosystem, will leverage Gemini vs Android and its partners. There’s also the question on how Apple will maintain the privacy and security aspect it is famous for while using a tool from Google whose focus on privacy of its users has been a concern. Will Google finally be able to enter the Apple Iron Clad vault and see what’s happening on iMessage? Fun times ahead, and maybe we will finally see iPhone and Android users unite as one happy family and saying, “In Gemini, we trust!”…What say?

Let's talk next AI smartphones! 📱💬 When it comes to upgrading, battery life, connection speeds, and carrier deals often top the list for most consumers. Generative artificial intelligence may be cutting-edge, but it's not the immediate focus during a smartphone upgrade cycle. Recent reports suggest that the smartphone industry is set to bounce back in 2024, with a projected 4% year-over-year growth in global shipments, driven by Android-based devices. Emerging markets are expected to lead the way in this growth, especially with the ongoing transition to 5G networks. Speaking of 5G, the rapid adoption of this technology is transforming connectivity experiences worldwide. As someone already equipped with a 5G-enabled phone, the convenience and speed it offers leave little room for nostalgia about slower network generations. So, what feature will define your next phone upgrade journey? Will it be the advancements in AI technology that sway your decision? 🤔 #Smartphones #AI #5G #TechnologyTrends

Apple’s potential collaboration with Google 🧐 👉 According to a Bloomberg report, Apple has been in talks with Google about licensing Gemini capabilities for the iPhone 16, which will be powered by iOS 18. 🤳 These discussions center around integrating Google’s Gemini AI engine into the iPhone. Meanwhile, Apple’s own AI models (currently under development) would focus on enabling features that operate on-device. The move comes apparently in response to the competitive landscape of integrating AI features on smartphones. Google’s Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro already feature an integrated AI system, and the new Galaxy S24 family works with Galaxy AI, supported by Google’s AI models, including Gemini Pro. 🤖 👉 Galaxy AI offers features such as gesture-based image search, article summarization, real-time call translation, and chat assistance. And Apple seems to be taking the same route and not falling behind by improving Siri’s capabilities and upgrading its mic for a more intuitive voice assistant experience. However, it’s important to note that the discussion between Apple and Google is still in progress. We’ll have to wait for an official announcement and see how Apple differentiates its technology from other smartphones. #technews #technologynews #apple #ai #innovation

I always believed strategic positioning is key to capturing consumers' mindshare and market share. While Apple has long dominated as 'The Smartphone' in the smartphone category, Google's Pixel series has been searching for its unique place. When Google Pixel first hit the scene, they were trying to go toe-to-toe with Apple in the smartphone arena. Admirable, sure, but let's be real - Once a consumer registers a brand in the mind it's very hard to dethrone it. But then, Google did something brilliant. They leveraged their software capability: #ArtificialIntelligence. The Pixel 8 series was a game-changer, packed with AI goodness. Yet, I couldn't help but wonder - why weren't they not strategically trying to position themselves as the 'AI Smartphone'? Think about it. When you hear "AI Smartphone," what brand pops into your head? Nothing solid, right? Samsung is making moves with their 'Galaxy AI', but the product category is still wide open. And that's why I was thrilled to see the latest Google Pixel 9 Pro ad. Finally, they're owning it - positioning themselves as 'The AI Phone'. It's like they've found their slingshot. Looking forward to seeing what the future holds for Pixel or the phone which will become, 'The AI Smartphone' in the consumers' minds. Check out the 30-Sec Pixel 9 Ad here : https://lnkd.in/egpssYdQ Also, I love Pixel's active social media team!

5moGreat statement!. I believe these results provide insights into the strategic moves of major tech companies and their potential impact on the market and will impact both consumer behavior and the financial performance of major tech companies and telecommunications carriers. By introducing advanced AI features, Google aims to set a new standard for smartphones. I believe this could increase demand for Pixel devices, allowing Google to capture a larger share of the premium smartphone market, traditionally dominated by Apple and Samsung. The emphasis on exclusive features for Pixel devices might strain relationships with other Android manufacturers, particularly Samsung.
