reposted to elaborate and provide a counter argument: To their points 1) workforce shortages: if this profession had a clinical pathway upward we would be more attractive to those considering a career in health sciences. Thereby retaining clinicians who would move on to different disciplines, and decreasing the rate of attrition in the field. 1a) if you want more skills change disciplines: THATS WHY WE HAVE WORKFORCE SHORTAGES 2) redundant scopes of practice: it already exists in healthcare. Currently as a CCP I have a scope of practice very similar to that of my RN and RT colleagues. PA's and NP's, in practice, have very similar roles and are often hired into roles that could be filled by either discipline. That doesn't change the fact that we need higher privileged clinicians in the out of hospital care space. 3) the PAs and NPs would be mad about it: To which I say "who cares?" Someone needs to take care of these patients, the existing system has failed them. We don't see PAs and NPs out here making house calls on the regular, so they can either get out of their offices or stand aside and let paramedics advance our profession to make up for the current shortcomings

Did you know… Confederation College students in their final semester of the paramedic program get to partake in ride-alongs! Students are paired up with a full-time crew, called preceptors. It’s an opportunity for the students to learn how to apply the skills they’ve learned in real life, attending to patient care with the guidance of on-duty paramedics. Ride-alongs also serve another purpose – they can help students determine whether the paramedic life is the right fit. If you’re interested in becoming a paramedic, know that you’ll receive plenty of hands-on training to make sure you feel confident on the job! #YouBelongintheSuperiorNorth #paramediclife

I believe this comment infers that many paramedics don’t have a degree. Also, it’s not the degree that makes the medic. It’s the intense training they receive and lengthy clinicals they’re required to pass that gives them the vast scope of practice needed to save lives in the field. Requiring a degree would only create the bottleneck issues we’ve seen in the nursing field. This would also cause a harmful ripple effect for rural communities, Fire Departments, Police Departments and the military. All of which utilize paramedics. In turn, slowing response times as it would sharply decrease the amount of paramedics available to respond to such situations. This would put pressure on counties to increase the scope of practice for EMTs which is broader than most counties require. Food for thought… a paramedics scope of practice is larger than that of an RN, it would create a serious job competition within the hospital setting if paramedics were required to have a degree. As hospitals would be getting a larger bang for their buck, and we all know that’s what’s most important to them. Just my two cents…
