I'm increasingly of the opinion that we need to better teach people how to think about the future. We live in an era of extraordinarily complicated problems - problems that are multigenerational in nature and which can only be solved by changing the way we think. Because, as a species, we err towards the short-term; whether that is on the level of individuals or whether that is corporations thinking about their next quarter or governments thinking about their next election cycle. So we need to change. And that starts with individuals. And the belief that what we do CAN matter. There is a thought-provoking short story by Ray Bradbury called 'The Sound of Thunder', first published in 1952, which explored the idea of time-travelling hunting trips into the late Cretaceous period to kill dinosaurs that were already destined to die. And of how the act of accidentally treading on a butterfly 65 million years earlier could cause profound changes to the present that the hunters returned to. It's become a common science fiction trope now. Be careful when you time travel - one wrong step in the past could change everything in the future! But, while we are quite happy to accept the possibility of an individual's actions in the past changing everything in the future, we don't tend to have the same belief that our own actions could similarly impact the future. But they can. They do. They are right now, whether we like it or not. So I'm increasingly of the opinion that we need to better teach people how to think about the future. To better reflect on what we are doing in the now, in order to shape a more positive future. It's something I care about considerably and which I intend to involve myself with more. Watch this space!
