CBSification « If you’re in Hollywood, don’t bother pitching the next “Billions,” “Succession,” “Downton Abbey” or “Mad Men” — that’s considered too 1 percent. The next “Transparent” or “Atlanta”? Too small. And forget about the next “Curb Your Enthusiasm” or “Entourage.” That kind of comedy is far too niche for today’s marketplace. Edgy is out. Mass is in. The problem with this move toward more broadly appealing programming — what some have called “CBS-ification” — is that mass-appeal shows aren’t what inspired millions of people to subscribe to these services in the first place. I can imagine three possibilities for TV as we go forward. One is that prestige TV will be consigned to a specific moment in history, like the socially conscious sitcoms of the 1960s and ’70s. Another possibility is that auteur-style shows will live on, but they won’t dominate the TV conversation, and they’ll be fewer and harder to find. Then there’s a third possibility. Maybe the big streamers’ increased focus on mass appeal will make room for a whole new species of TV — scrappy new voices that target the suddenly underserved demand for daring drama and comedy. The success of the film studio A24 is a testament to how curatorial taste can quickly establish a devoted, if niche, following. »

As many will know, TV Producer John Balson recently lost his life. In a powerful message of defiance, he asked his family to give a letter to Bectu to raise awareness about work-stress safety. "It is out of control in factual TV and there must be many others almost at breaking point like I was without knowing it." There is no room for ambiguity, this industry did contribute to his passing, and we can’t let his story be brushed under the rug. I didn’t know John, but I know the darkness that can set in when working in an industry that takes no prisoners. If you’re not working, it’s terrifying, if you are working, you’re working every hour of every day to justify your worth. It’s an unsustainable model, built on the illusion that we should be lucky to be working as creatives. Out of respect for John’s life, and for his family, please take a moment to acknowledge the systematic change that is needed to break this cycle.
