Just how many jobs must one apply to before they reach their goal? I'm not asking this question oblivious to the other important factors that affect the answer to my last question. I'm well informed here. Someone's journey turned into an unpredicted five month journey. While some had to apply to 500 jobs to land 10 interviews! In all, I know( and hope you do too) that though the obstacles lay painfully in front of many job seekers, it's not a reason to give up. For now, there might be a need for creative ways to achieve this goal aside from the conventional way, that is way tougher. Yes, every rejection means a step closer to that final yes! I've been entirely silent on this until now, but I agree with Mickey here - I've been out of the entertainment industry for 10 months now. I thought having some of the big companies I've worked for on my resume would make finding the next gig relatively easy, but nah. I've come close to a few jobs these past 10 months but hardly a single entertainment industry employer has so much as responded to my resume, even though they seem to be posting jobs like they were candy. During this time, I started working weekends at an LA winery. Wine has been a huge nerdy side-passion of mine for about a decade now. Working there is essentially hospitality/customer service, but I absolutely love it, and have moved up to teaching night classes there as well (yup, wine classes!) I love making someone's day/evening/night. I think we forget that ALL jobs are essentially about making SOMEONE'S day easier/better/brighter. That's why the job exists. I honestly plan to continue working the wine weekend gig whenever I find a new weekday gig, if at all possible. I've even started a wine-and-entertainment podcast during this downtime, and I'm having an absolute ball. Am I bleeding money a fair bit? Oh yeah. But would I play anything differently, given what's under my control? Nope. Enjoy what you do, even when it's not what you thought you'd be doing. Even when the stress of finding better financial standing is every damn day. A lot of things are out of our control, but our pride in ourselves and whatever work we're doing is not.

Coming from an acting background, I've found myself pretty amused by how similar job hunting in the Marketing world is to auditioning in the acting world- it's the same formula! As an actor I was applying for hundreds of roles and I was lucky if I got five auditions out of that, and then out of THAT I was lucky to get one actual contract! There's a lot of competition and the search can feel ruthless. What I've taken from my past experiences are: ✅ When writing to employers, don't just compliment them and detail your experience, make sure to let them know what you've gotten up to in between jobs to develop your skills. ✅ Don't downplay your skill set- Skills can come from the smallest of jobs or experiences, don't be afraid to talk yourself up! ✅ Stop comparing yourself to everyone else- It can be helpful to learn from others, but if you spend your life comparing yourself to every candidate out there then you'll never get anything done. I'm grateful that being an actor has toughened me up and allowed me to see rejection as redirection instead of anything personal. There's always something to learn from every job application and it's just a case of pushing through.

Each of these companies' revenue streams rests on the eyeballs and the unpaid time, effort, and energy of job seekers. The entire show doesn’t go on without anyone in the theater. No one makes any money, and employers get no new hires. Job applicants are who the whole show is for. But robbing someone of their professional voice while seating them at the theater and then being surprised at how many more movie theaters have 'popped up,' suggests one of a few possible things happening. Only ONE of those reasons is a 'talent shortage,' But you will never hear any other reason if you genuinely believe that silencing an entire stakeholder during the job search process is the only possible way to professionally engage with hiring. #jobs #jobsearch #realtalkjobhunting #transparency #anonymity #crowdsourced
