Don’t read from a script when you’re talking with executives. I've spent much of my career connecting with healthcare executives in facilities across the country. Here’s what I’ve learned: 👇 Asking “Have you done this?” or “Do you have experience doing that?” isn’t a good use of their time or yours. These leaders have accomplished a lot in their careers. You should have an idea of what they’ve done before you approach them. They probably have 15 or 20 years of healthcare leadership experience. So if you ask them “have you done that,” they’ll start to lose interest in your opportunity. Instead of “how many people report to you?” Ask them “can you tell me about the team you’re currently working with?” Instead of “do you have at least five years of experience doing ____” Look at their career history and comment “I see you were at _____ for 5 years as their ______, what was that like?” Hiring an exec isn’t about checking a bunch of boxes. It’s about allowing them to know, like & trust you. And that comes by having a real conversation, not reading from a script.

When it comes to hiring, “Mr/Mrs. Right” is ALWAYS a better investment than “Mr./Mrs. Right Now.” It’s critical to avoid your very human propensity to value short-term rewards more than long-term ones, even though the data (and history!) suggest it’s a terrible idea. Be patient and meticulous in your hiring decisions! Don’t become seduced by the short-term rewards—filling the position, reducing your stress, etc.--because if you do, rest assured you’ll pay far more for the inevitable long-term consequences: the pain, cost, mess, and recovery from a mis-hire. #leadership #growth #planning #hiring #workforce #smb

The reason most D&A teams don't deliver "value" is down to bad hiring decisions ❌ You see, we're in this vicious cycle that we're struggling to break out of D&A teams are often set up to fail ⛔ What business leaders want is "value" (however they quantify and measure it)) 📈💵 But they don't hire for the skills, experience and attributes of "delivering value" So what they get is technology, because; 1️⃣ That's what they've hired for 2️⃣ That's what they've asked this person to deliver In tougher economic times, D&A teams get cut because they're a "cost-centre" and not a "value creator" Which we're seeing play out once again this year.... Yet, when the time comes for those organisations to have another go, they do the same thing And this cycle repeats itself, often many times over Until we can change the perception that D&A isn't a purely technological endeavour, we'll continue to be in this position Because all of this "D&A doesn't create value" narrative, starts with a misunderstanding and poor hiring decisions Some of my best work over the years has happened when I've had the chance to intervene and course-correct The hiring decisions of Business Leaders who are hiring Data Leaders Helping them to understand what skills and experience to seek that will make their D&A investment a success But also the questions to ask to assess those skills effectively #data #analytics #leadership #businessvalue #hiring

This is how hiring companies eventually build a workforce (including the leadership team) at the center of the bell curve. No outliers. No out-of-the-box thinkers. No originals. And without those, they slowly sink and die. No innovation comes from large companies except the handful where the leadership has a very long-term vision, is not afraid of taking R&D risks, and hires outliers.
