A fascinating article by Nason Maani demonstrating why the UK needs a new alcohol strategy that does not have input from the alcohol industry or allied organisations. It includes the shocking fact that at a recent Health Select committee "None of the panellists were asked to declare any conflicts of interest at the opening of the session". Organisations such as Nacoa UK need to be included ay every stage of policy making; alcohol harm affects more than the individual drinking. Every COA (child of an alcoholic) could provide shocking and powerful testimony as to how alcohol harmed them. It's often shocking, unpleasant and upsetting to hear, and never as slick as a big industry presentation. But it's real, and it's happening to 1 in 5 children right now. However rarely is this heard, particularly given the government cut all dedicated funding for children affected by a parent's drinking. This deeply immoral decision came at a time when alcohol specific deaths in the UK are at an all time high.
