"The UK needs a new alcohol strategy that prioritises health and equity, is informed by guidance from the WHO and independent civil society, and aims to prevent alcohol harms, and protect policymaking, research, and public health practice from undue influence from the alcohol industry." A fascinating article by Nason Maani demonstrating why the UK needs a new alcohol strategy that does not have input from the alcohol industry or allied organisations. It includes the shocking fact that at a recent Health Select committee "None of the panellists were asked to declare any conflicts of interest at the opening of the session". Organisations such as Nacoa UK need to be included ay every stage of policy making; alcohol harm affects more than the individual drinking. Every COA (child of an alcoholic) could provide shocking and powerful testimony as to how alcohol harmed them. It's often shocking, unpleasant and upsetting to hear, and never as slick as a big industry presentation. But it's real, and it's happening to 1 in 5 children right now. However rarely is this heard, particularly given the government cut all dedicated funding for children affected by a parent's drinking. This deeply immoral decision came at a time when alcohol specific deaths in the UK are at an all time high. More people than ever are being harmed by alcohol, yet the alcohol industry are being allowed to promote their commercial interests, when the voices of those most affected are being silenced. #coa #acoa #nacoauk #bmj #inequalities #alcoholharm #alcoholpolicy #familyillness

A pleasure to write this with colleagues in BMJ. The UK needs a new alcohol strategy, and discourse on it can't be polluted by the industry as it was earlier this year #CDoH Global Health Policy Unit, Edinburgh Institute Of Alcohol Studies Alice Wiseman may van Schalkwyk https://lnkd.in/eUXkHfi5

Deeply relevant to all areas of health because we know that our health systems are designed with barriers and rooted in exclusionary and discriminatory philosophies: - “(Global health) allows us to talk about people as beneficiaries of our money. As targets of our interventions. It allows us to look at Black, Brown or Indigenous life as a goal”. - "You have to be on a journey from an active ally to co-conspirator. If you were an active ally then you would support donations of COVID-19 vaccines to the global south. If you were a co-conspirator, you ask for patents and technology to be transferred to the global south so that people in the global south can manufacture their own vaccines. It means you have to choose to become anti-racist vocally verbally actively."

Hi dear friends... not to get political, that's a headache... ....but there is a health treaty in which all members of the world are deciding upon to coordinate international health measures. A few clients have been asking me about it and I've been doing some research on both sides. It's important to know the issues and be informed. You can then decide to call your Senators and Reps and state what you support. Be sure to use your #peppermintoil and #lavenderoil after reading this if you get a headache after. ;) Here's some background: https://buff.ly/4adFJOL

An eye-opening article that sheds light on who is truly informing organizations, like WHO, is a must-read. The article poses a critical question about why abstinence groups are being allowed to drive global health policy. It's concerning to see large organizations holding the strings and playing puppet master in our industry who are specifically anti-alcohol. #GlobalHealth #beverageindustry #HealthPolicy

Simple ask. Excellent ask. I have a small request. Please focus on prioritization. The 3rd ask ' A commitment to Peace' Is critical for the other two asks to succeed. If we commit to Peace, the rest will follow. The first two are unsustainable if we do not prioritize committing to Peace. Let's stop beating around the bush and be focused. Peace. Peace. Peace, at all cost. We can not celebrate saving lives in Africa when women die in war torn countries and children die in hospitals. If we are asking, let us have one ask. Just ask those who have the power. Stop war. Embrace Peace. Period.
