Drowning isn't the only risk to your pets when it comes to bodies of water in the summertime. Be sure to dry your dog thoroughly after swims and remove its collar, which can trap moisture, to avoid skin infections. If the water looks like something you wouldn’t swim in or drink, keep your pet away. Bodies of water, such as lakes and ponds, serve as a home for diseases. While some diseases are of little threat and easily treated, others can be devasting. Knowing about these diseases is the best way to protect your dog. The Wyoming Department of Health wants people to remember to protect themselves from mosquito bites to help prevent West Nile virus infection. 1) DAWN and 2) DUSK – Mosquitoes prefer to feed at dawn or dusk, so avoid spending time outside during these times. 3) DRESS – Wear shoes, socks, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt outdoors. Clothing should be loose-fitting and made of tightly woven materials. 4) DRAIN – Mosquitoes breed in shallow, stagnant water. Reduce the amount of standing water by draining and/or removing objects with standing water. 5) DEET – Use an insect repellent containing DEET (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide). When using DEET, be sure to read and follow label instructions. Picaridin (KBR 3023) or oil of lemon eucalyptus can also be effective. https://lnkd.in/gMWAHJu9

Ick…ticks! Ticks are active all year long, especially during warm weather. Here are some tips to prevent Lyme disease and other tickborne illnesses. 🕷️ Use EPA-registered repellants containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus, para-menthane-diol or 2-undecanone. 👕 Wear light-colored clothing so ticks are easier to see. 👣 Walk in the center of trails. 🐕 Examine and wipe your gear, clothing and pets to prevent ticks from being brought inside. Lint rollers work well for this. 💊 Make sure pets are on tick prevention medication. 🙋🏽 Check your entire body for ticks with a mirror after coming in from outdoors. 🚿 Bathe or shower within 2 hours after coming indoors, to find and wash off ticks. 🌡️ Tumble dry clothes on high heat for 10 minutes to kill ticks on clothing.
