💜 21 September: WORLD ALZHEIMER'S DAY 💜 Did you know? ➡ More than 55 million people worldwide live with Alzheimer's disease and it is estimated that every 68 seconds, someone develops the disease. ➡ Although the terms 'Alzheimer's disease' and 'dementia' are used interchangeably, it is not the same. Dementia is an umbrella term for conditions associated with cognitive decline. Alzheimer's disease is the most common and well-known form of dementia. ➡ Although age is a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease, it is not part of the typical aging process and not everyone will develop the disease as they get older. ➡ It is often referred to as a family disease because of the chronic emotional stress a family experience when watching their loved one slowly decline. ➡ Progressive symptoms include confusion, changes in behaviour and social skills, and affected communication. There is a gradual decline in cognitive abilities such as memory, attention, understanding instructions, reasoning and problem solving, decision making, judgement, and perception. As a result, independence in activities of daily living are greatly affected. ➡ Occupational Therapists support persons diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease to remain as independent as possible as the disease progresses. We aim to maintain or enhance participation in meaningful daily activities, safety and overall quality of life. We also focus on supporting the family/carers of people diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Let's create awareness on 21 September!
21 September is World Alzheimer’s Day. Let’s support awareness, research, and hope for a world without dementia. World Alzheimer's Day reminds us that although memories may fade, love and understanding still shine in the heart. #Alzheimers #WorldAlzheimersDay
