September should be a time of back-to-school shopping, seeing friends, and preparing for the school year ahead. This time of year can look very different for families facing a cancer diagnosis. 155 kids in BC are diagnosed with cancer annually, with over 100 of them trading classrooms for chemotherapy. And while BC Children’s Hospital has the best survival rate for childhood cancers in Canada, 1 in 5 children do not make it. This month, we will be sharing the stories of the mighty patients and families facing pediatric cancers, and the care and innovation taking place at BC Children’s—proof that your support makes a real difference. But there’s still more to be done. Thanks to a generous match from the Michael Cuccione Foundation , every donation made until September 30 will be doubled in honour of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month—including all monthly gifts for the first 12 months. This means you'll make an even greater impact on the researchers at BC Children's who are pushing to create better, brighter futures for kids with cancer—so they can get back into school and have the chance to simply be kids again. Give today and make a mighty impact by visiting MakeUsMighty.ca .

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month. We can ALL learn a thing or two about childhood cancer. 1. All chemotherapy is not created equal Chemo is a term for a whole family of medications, all of which are administered differently and have different side effects. Be careful not to assume what a child undergoing chemotherapy might look like or what care they might require—every treatment is unique. 2. A fever is a medical emergency Since kids fighting cancer have weakened immune systems, a fever can be an indicator that their bodies are working too hard to fight off germs. This means they need to be checked out at the hospital immediately. 3. Kids fighting cancer cannot play on public playgrounds Speaking of weakened immune systems, kids fighting cancer have to avoid public places that carry a lot of germs. This is why we build backyard playsets for these families! This September, we are working hard to provide play to 80 families fighting childhood cancer. YOU can help us get there! Visit playdefeatscancer.org to donate, start a fundraiser, or spread the word! #playdefeatscancer2024 #childhoodcancerawarenessmonth #hope #impact #nonprofit

Cancer. Breast cancer. What a terrible, unforgiving disease. There are plenty of cancers and terrible other diseases that also need attention. But this is one I am personally touched by, and it is cruel to see. The statistics are staggering, and until impacted it's very easy to forget or not realise. I myself become complacent and forget when the medication is working. You forget about the amazing advancements in medicine, science and innovation. And you forget about the lobbying efforts needed to get this medicine on the PBS. We forget, but the patient doesn't. It's time to become less complacent and act to try make a difference, no matter how small. There are already a number of fantastic support networks, such as the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc., the Breast Cancer Network Australia and in particular Dreams2Live4 - who provide unique support to adults. These all-need support too, to keep supporting loved ones. This weekend, like many years past, I will be running the Mother's Day Classic Foundation Fun Run in support of my sister who is battling Metastatic Breast Cancer. It's a very small gesture, but I would appreciate any support through donations in the link below, to support her, and to help fight this terrible disease. This is just the start, because it is never too late to do your part in supporting others. ❗ 1 in 7 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. ❗ About 1 in 500 men are diagnosed in their lifetime. ❗ Around 1000 young women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, equivalent to about 3 young women each day. ❗ In 2023, over 3,200 Australians passed away from breast cancer (including 30-40 males). ❗ Approximately one woman under the age of 40 is expected to die each week from breast cancer. That’s 9 Australians a day dying from the disease. ❗ In the last 10 years, breast cancer diagnosis have increased by 21%.

Part 6 (concluding part) Our Collective Responsibility As we honor these women—survivors, fighters, those we’ve lost, and those at risk—we must remind ourselves of the importance of community. Whether it’s through donations, participating in awareness talks/walks, or volunteering to support someone going through treatment, we all have a role to play in this fight. Breast cancer is not just a women’s issue; it affects entire families and communities. Together, we can create a world where breast cancer diagnoses are met with even more effective treatments, and where fewer women have to experience the pain of losing a loved one to this disease. This October, let’s come together to celebrate the strength of the women who have survived, stand beside those still in their battle, remember the women we’ve lost, and commit to a future where breast cancer no longer has the power to take away the lives we hold dear. In the words of Maya Angelou, "I can be changed by what happens to me, but I refuse to be reduced by it." Let this be the mantra that guides us through Breast Cancer Awareness Month and beyond. #breastcancer #cancer #breastcancerawareness #breastcancertreatment #breastcancerresearch #oncology #october

"Parents should never outlive their children" We are so grateful to our incredible family charity partners, set up by families touched by cancer. Without them, much of our research into cancers in children, teenagers and young adults would not be possible. With their help, we have made huge strides in diagnosing and treating young patients. But huge challenges remain. Some children’s cancers remain very difficult to treat, and survival rates remain very poor. Even when successful, many are left with lifelong side effects from harsh treatments. That's why we need more people to join our cause – and help cure more cancer, more kindly. Only together, can we transform the outlook for children and young people with cancer. Our work is ambitious – and we need ongoing support to help us discover kinder treatments and offer more children the hope of a cure. As an individual, setting up a regular monthly gift will have the maximum possible benefit for patients, as it can support our research projects over several years. No parent should outlive their child. Please join us with a regular gift today: https://bitly.ws/3ba3c

Senior HR Business Partner with experience leading global teams. Passionate about aligning HR initiatives with business goals to drive innovation and growth.
In the month of September, my company promotes a dedicated community impact day. While many of our locations around the world are participating in community impact events and many Alkegen employees volunteer all year long, in September we take time to highlight and inspire. I love that this takes place in September, which is also pediatric cancer awareness month. Before the month is out, just one post about pediatric cancer. I’ll hit you with only 3 important bullets: 1. In the United States, only 4% of federal funding for cancer research is dedicated to pediatric cancer research. Children need different treatments than do adults, but little effort and funding is placed on investing in our future. 2. Every day, 46 children are diagnosed with cancer. 3. Every day, 7 children die from cancer. 7 families and communities are devastated. We cannot think of this as “only” 46 or “only” 7. The impact is infinitely concentric. If you don’t know how to make an impact in your community, start with the children. Donate your time or supplies to a Ronald McDonald house, a family grief center, or food security organization. Opportunities are abundant. The most important thing to remember about your efforts is that if you make impact on only one life, you have changed the world. Every minute you can give matters; every penny you can give matters. If you’d like to donate dollars or find out how to help, check out some of my favorite organizations: Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation Four Diamonds CHEMOWARRIOR THE ELI SIDLER FOUNDATION The Cure Starts Now Cancer Foundation

Happy Mother's Day to all the incredible mothers and mother figures in our lives. 🌸 Today we celebrate you and thank you for your unconditional love, support and patience. ❤️ Earlier this week also marked World Ovarian Cancer Awareness Day. We'd like to honour all the mums, aunts, grandmothers, and sisters sadly impacted by ovarian cancer. We know last year alone, an estimated 1,786 females were diagnosed with the devastating disease. There is no early detection test so it's important for to be aware of the signs and symptoms such as abdominal bloating, abdominal or pelvic pain and appetite loss. As these symptoms can be common with other conditions, it's always best to get checked if you present with any of these. This Mother's Day, you can show your support for all mothers by donating to ACRF. Your gift will help to fund groundbreaking research into new ways to prevent, detect and treat all types of cancer, including ovarian cancer. 🎁 https://bit.ly/44BpXvK #mothersday #ovariancancerawareness #cancerresearch
