Global demand for corporate accountability over environmental damage is on the rise 🌍 In the UK, a hearing on behalf of 620,000 individuals, 46 Brazilian municipalities, 2,000 businesses, and 65 faith-based institutions who are suing mining giant BHP for its role in the 2015 Mariana dam disaster in Brazil, is set to begin next week. In another landmark decision, the UK Court of Appeal granted 13,000 Nigerian claimants from the Bille and Ogale communities the right to sue Shell’s Nigerian subsidiary, SPDC, over 100 oil spills. Meanwhile, in Alaska, 6 Southwest Tribes won a legal battle against the Donlin Gold Mine, with the judge ruling that federal agencies failed to fully assess the risks of a catastrophic tailings dam failure that could harm the Kuskokwim River watershed.
