Join us on Thursday, July 25 at 12:00 p.m. EST during our July Virtual Learning Series, “An Exploration of Ethics in AI and Its Impact on Black Children,” for an enlightening discussion on the intersection of ethical #AI use and the education of Black children. Leah Austin, EdD, President and CEO of NBCDI, alongside esteemed leaders including Jalen Taylor from BCDI-Colorado, Dr. Kiesha King of T-Mobile, and Winston Roberts from KIPP New Jersey, will explore the critical role of emerging technology and digital inclusion in shaping a safer and more equitable environment for Black Children. In partnership with BCDI-Colorado, ISTE and KIPP NJ, we are excited to delve into the conversation. We will address historical disparities, biases in technology and ethical frameworks crucial to safeguarding Black children online. AI algorithms can perpetuate and exacerbate existing biases, leading to unfair treatment of Black children in educational settings. Studies have shown that AI systems can inherit biases present in the data they are trained on. For instance, research from MIT Media Lab found that facial recognition software had higher error rates for darker-skinned individuals compared to lighter-skinned individuals. Ethical AI can also help ensure equitable access to quality education for Black children, addressing disparities in educational resources and opportunities. According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), Black students are more likely to attend under-resourced schools. AI can be used to identify and mitigate these inequities by providing personalized learning experiences and identifying students in need of additional support.
