“Job security is always there. But job quality is not.” This was the top answer from a Structural Engineer when asked about the job market. They're absolutely right. I cannot think of a better time in history to be a structural engineer. If someone disagrees with me, please let me know in the comments. Salaries are up. Demand for work is up. And I’m seeing a lot of firms hiring. If you don’t like your job, just answer one of the 50 DMs in your inbox from Engineering Recruiters (it’s cool if you want to start with mine first 😂 ). So what do you do if you're a manager at a firm that needs engineers? Here’s what I would be thinking about: 1) Invest in your current team (salaries, benefits, career growth, education, mentorship, company culture, etc). Finding replacements now is harder than ever and will take longer than you think. 2) Dial in your company’s branding (website, socials, etc.). More than ever candidates are looking to socials to help them answer what it is like to work there. 3) Use all available channels to find candidates. Recruiters, network, website, referrals. Always be networking. 4) Invest in an internship program if you haven’t already. Interns often become future employees. They may also refer other engineers to you.  5) Consider automation and outsourcing. What repeatable tasks can be taken away from your engineers so they can spend more time on important projects? I carried out my internship at Krapa Structural Consultancy The purpose of the program is to gain real-world experience and knowledge in whatever academic field a student chooses and often these opportunities can, when approached with the right attitude and with the right timing, lead to a potential career after college. This study involves the detailed estimation of various Reinforced Concrete (RCC) elements like Slab, Beam, Column, Footing, Lintel, Sunshade etc. The project focused on the preparation of Drafting and Detailed estimation for RCC and load-bearing structures of a government-subsidized godown expansion Yojna. Another project entailed the Estimation of Building components including Foundations, Columns, Slabs, Beams, Lintels, Sunshades, Boundary walls, Septic tanks, and Infrastructure like Roads and Cable trenches, for multiple Indian Oil Corporation Limited (Pipeline) stations along the Dahej to Dhumat route. I hope I tried to do my internship report more precise, brief and clear. The purpose of this report is to explain what I did and learned during an internship from 29th June to 12th July 2024. Through this hands-on experience, a thorough understanding of Estimation methodologies, Quantity calculations, and Cost analysis for large-scale RCC structures was gained. The report shows an overview of tasks done during internship in detail.

Do prestigious universities (MIT, Ivy league, etc.) really matter in Civil? Are the opportunities or roles different for those graduates? Excluding the fact it must be accredited university. Let’s Discuss! A little background, I went to a small non-name brand school. But have noticed big prestigious schools like MIT, Cornell, etc popping up in my network. My gut reaction when I see these guys is "what are they doing here, lol." But let’s get into it. In general the answer is mixed. Lets start with the benefits of the universities Most probably know the career fairs make the difference. If you want to get out of traditional Civil Engineering. Think Big 4 business consultants, school matters and engineering lets u stand out The other place it matters is if you want to be a professor or do research. Your ability to get the better position within a university project or for grants on cool research project then of course your school matters. EVERYTHING ELSE NO ONE CARES For all the normies like me. It doesn't matter after that and most stop asking about school after 2 years of experience, So what matters then? All that starts mattering if you do actual design or for most Civil engineering career paths is the following: Years of Experience Licensure (PE matters) Certification (PMP, LEED, etc.) That's it. Master's Degree for doesn't matter for most after the first couple years. Just an old dude who has been around for a while.
