Three recent real estate graduates from the MBA Class of 2024 have accepted positions working in affordable housing development and investment after engaging with the Wood Center’s Housing Affordability Initiative during their time at UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School. The Wood Center’s Housing Affordability Initiative was launched in 2019 with the first Affordable Housing Symposium. In addition to the annual symposium, the initiative has added a Speaker Series that brings speakers with workforce housing expertise to campus each semester. Last semester, housing affordability courses taught by Professor Eric Maribojoc were also added to the real estate program offerings for both undergraduates and MBA students. The next goal for the initiative is to pilot an affordable housing internship fellowship for a student who chooses an internship focused on workforce housing solutions that may not pay as competitively as a traditional internship in commercial real estate. Aidan McConnell, Marc Bertucci, and Timothy Burke credit their experience with the initiative as part of their reasoning for pursuing an affordable housing career that will allow them to make an impact. My article on the complications of employing #apprentices has been published by the Estates Gazette. Apprentices are so widely used in the #propertysector, but this information is also particularly relevant to #education and #manufacturing employers!
I am a senior practice development lawyer in the employment team at Irwin Mitchell and help our clients and team keep up to date.
We are lucky to have #apprenticeship expert Laura Willis in our team. She's written a brilliant blog for ESTATES GAZETTE,LIMITED(THE) to help employers in the #propertysector stay on the right side of the law when taking on apprentices. The law around apprenticeships is complicated and it's easy to make expensive mistakes, particularly if you are using old style apprenticeship templates! PS. I contributed the odd word or two! Meet our current #Summer2024 #intern, Matthew Bond, George Mason University class of #2026. Why FHWA Central Federal Lands? CFL offers a very hands-on experience where not only do I get an in-person introduction to the #constructionfield, but I get to do so in our #nationalparks and other amazing areas! How Your Experience Has Been So Far: This #internship has gone beyond what I’ve expected I’ve had the #incredibleopportunity to be on the construction site almost daily shadowing the #siteinspectors and learning directly from our #projectengineer. What have you been working on? I’m mainly working on the scenic loop repair project in Theodore Roosevelt National Park south unit in #NorthDakota. A typical day on site I shadow the inspectors and get to learn about project operations, design implementations, and everything else there is to know about a construction site. At the end of the day, I write a daily report on what I’ve observed and learned throughout the day. What have you learned so far? I’ve learned much about #roadwaydesign, how they’re built, and the challenges associated with the process. By being included in project meetings I have gained a basic understanding of the administrative side of project operations as well. Leading the Apprenticeship-Style Student Internship Program for Software Development and Digital Design at Bow Valley College ✯ Bridging Skills Gap ✯ Enhancing Employee Retention ✯ Connecting #HeroesInspiringHeroes
Coincidentally, I celebrated one year (plus a day) as the Apprenticeship Program Lead at Bow Valley College at the Calgary Marketing Association Summer Mixer! The learning was outstanding, the people were fantastic, and the Burwood Distillery staff were busy and efficient. Well done! I focused on exploring how to better connect #DigitalDesign #ApprenticeshipStyle student interns with companies that are committed to industry excellence. Here’s a summary of what industry professionals shared about our program: 1. Our program de-risks hiring junior talent through our wage subsidy and partnership with TECHNATION 2. Guests were impressed with how apprentices are reducing the workload of senior talent and contributing to a positive workplace atmosphere. 3. The ROI is clear as employers can train students for the specific skills they need at a lower cost, leading to higher employee retention. 4. The approach to preparing students to hit the ground running is inspiring #MissionBeforePosition. 5. The #respect and ongoing support for employers during student placements builds capacity. Moving forward, I can promote the program using the RATS framework: Results, Actions, Tasks, Situation. This modern approach flips the traditional order, focusing on results first. "Graduates show they are committed to career goals and are willing to learn!" - David D. Wingman Direct Marketing & Digital Advisory and a proud employer at BVC. Shoutout to @Cory Whyte giving me my first ride in a #Tesla to the event! Thank you for what you bring to the industry and community!
