In new legislation to be announced by Labour Minister David Piccini on Friday - which was inspired by a story in the Star about "ghost jobs" — larger companies will have to disclose in help wanted ads whether a position actually exists and needs to be filled, or if the posting is to find candidates for future openings. In Ontario, the average number of applicants per job posting has been rising significantly. As of early 2024, the average number of applicants per hire was about 72, which is a 46% increase compared to two years ago. This surge is influenced by the prominence of job boards and social media as key channels for applications. However, referrals and in-house recruiters tend to yield fewer, but often more qualified, applicants . This trend reflects a more competitive job market, with many applicants vying for each open position across various industries.

Most states have #job openings that are still outpacing the number of job seekers, indicating that employment conditions are broadly healthy. #Florida has the most job openings at nearly half a million where openings outpace job seekers at 1.4 openings/job seeker. The states where job openings are outpacing job seekers by 2:1 are #Virginia, #NorthDakota, #SouthDakota, #Vermont, and #Mississippi. However, most are small states, with less than 20,000 job openings, except Virginia at 273,000 though that is about half the size of Florida. Six states -- #California, #NewYork, #Illinois, #Washington, #Nevada, and #RhodeIsland -- have fewer job openings than job seekers. While #California has the most job openings as of the end of July 2024 with 622,000 openings, these just provide 60% jobs to the 1 million unemployed in the state , or a 0.61 job openings/unemployed ratio. In #New York, there were 405,000 job openings, or 90% of the number of unemployed. What does this mean for the real estate market? The lack of job opportunities relative to job seekers will be one driver that will sustain #outmigration from states like California, New York, and Illinois to states where jobs are plentiful relative to job seekers like #Florida, #Virginia, #Georgia, #NorthCarolina, #SouthCarolina, #Pennsylvania, #Massachusetts, and #Arizona.
