Ramadan Kareem to those celebrating the holy month. I am an ally and ask you to be mindful of the following:
Be mindful of scheduling team lunches or eating on camera during meetings
Pause before you speak. Saying something like “I should fast too. I need to lose weight.” does not respect what Ramadan is truly about to those of the Muslim faith.
Offer more frequent breaks so those fasting can reenergize during this time.
Consider anything in the evening as optional. Happy hours, social mixers, even team bonding events - try to understand that your muslim team members want to participate but might just be exhausted from the work day.
Islam is a religion celebrated across the world by Black, Asian, Latinx people, etc. Unless stated by the team member, you wouldn’t know who would possibly observe Ramadan. Don’t assume, but rather create a safe space to seek to understand the practice
Last but not least, wish people a Ramadan Mubarak or Ramadan Kareem! Wishing someone a Joyous Ramadan or a Happy Ramadan goes a long way and shows you acknowledging their identity and shows your support
Wishing everyone observing Ramadan a peaceful month full of joy and happiness
