This week, instead of my regular digest, I’m sharing a new report from Pixalate that I believe is worth a read if you're working with CTV ads. The digest will be back next Monday as usual. Pixalate shares Q4 2023 data on ad spending and invalid traffic for virtual multichannel video programming distributor (vMVPD) apps across major CTV platforms: Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, and Samsung Electronics Smart TV. Here are some highlights: Roku saw a significant 70% of ad spending directed towards vMVPDs, while non-vMVPD apps faced a 55% higher rate of invalid traffic. Amazon Fire TV witnessed 46% of the open programmatic ad spend going to vMVPDs, with non-vMVPD apps facing a much higher rate of invalid traffic (161% higher). Apple TV, 63% of ad spend went to vMVPDs, but apps outside this model experienced the biggest jump in invalid traffic, being 184% higher. Samsung Electronics Smart TV experienced an 89% ad spend on vMVPDs, though these platforms encountered a slightly higher rate of invalid traffic compared to others. The platform reports offer more information into the structure of vMVPD apps. QUALCOMM 1998 Superbowl TV Ads! A story untold for 26 years!   Since it’s "Super Sunday" week, gotta post QUALCOMM’S 1998 “Big Game” Ads. A big step forward for Qualcomm’s phone biz, which in the day was one of the bigger “Digital Phone” manufacturers in the US.    Qualcomm produced TWO TV ads. The 1st 30-Second spot, “Arrival” was meant to be a “teaser” in days before the game, and then both spots were to be aired DURING “Game Time”. BUT THE 2nd Spot WASN'T AIRED during the game! (which is why may folks in the community saw only the 2nd ad, and may have thought WTF?).   As you will see, the first 30-second ad shows a harried business guy (same actor as the “Farmer” ad), arriving in a foreign country and being pulled aside as his unique “Q phone” draws attention. And the SECOND 30-second ad shows him exhausted in his hotel room, only to hear cheering, and mistakenly thinks the cheering is for the Q-phone and him!   WHY wasn't second ad aired for game? Well, in November 1998, while we were producing BOTH ads, in real life, a Qualcomm field engineer was doing a “Site Survey” in a DIFFERENT foreign land. He was out in the city, and using a handheld GPS along with various “signal strength” tools to figure out where to place new cell sites in the city. Standard network design practice for field engineers (even today).   Unwittingly, he may have been somewhere he shouldn’t have been, and was ARRESTED for espionage! This was national/global news at the time (i.e. national TV, CNN, The New York Times etc). It was a BIG deal.   Even though the engineer was home by early December 1998 (easy to find details), the first ad, titled “Arrival” was too close for comfort, so we appropriately shelved it and ran the 2nd ad twice for our two ad windows during the game. It was later shown publicly in a limited way (for awards, etc), but nowhere near the attention of a “Super Sunday” audience. Hence the WTF by Big Game watchers.   I’m many things but not an art film guy. These ads were not intended to be “product ads”, they were intended to be “edgy” and “atmospheric” and project that Qualcomm's phones were a bit "out there", which they were! Perfect while people ate their “Chips and Guac”.  Distinguishing the QC brand from the likes of Nokia, Ericsson, and Motorola Lessons for today's #smartphone world: Basically, EVERY phone in the world, 6B+ plus, now has GPS positioning functionality BUILT-IN, and powers apps that BILLIONS use daily.….and a mere 26 years ago, having #gps capability could get you arrested and make global news! Worth thinking about! Small world Postscript: I was Qualcomm’s VP, Marketing then, and we were given the objective to “own” Superbowl and San Diego, and we literally went to town. We title sponsored tons of local events in San Diego, and our “Co-Sponsor” for many events was SprintPCS (now T-Mobile) whose regional area was being run by Don McGuire, a great guy who today is Qualcomm’s CMO!   ENJOY!   https://lnkd.in/gTS9Edp2

CHANGE MY MIND: Apple will buy DV360 from Google in 2024. Hear me out. Google is facing antitrust issues literally across the world. If they're forced to disassemble their ads businesses, what's the most likely place? Search isn't going anywhere... YouTube isn't going anywhere... that leaves the DoubleClick remnants, meaning DV360 (and less substantially campaign manager). Apple is going to get into the big ads business sooner rather than later and they are one of the few companies on the planet that have the capital to buy DV360, the tech & the network. Microsoft just finished years of antitrust scrutiny with its purchase of Activision & has OpenAI & the drama that comes with that. Amazon already has what they need.
