We think outside the box to explore new ways of cherishing and retaining the origins, historic past and unique stories of our most treasured buildings and spaces, while simultaneously regenerating and reinvigorating them for future generations to come. In our new video series, ‘Outside the Box’ we deliver a mystery box to Ian Gardner, Arup Fellow. Inside the box, Ian finds an array of old photographs of one of his most significant projects – revitalizing Pancras International Station. Describing each photograph, Ian explains the process by which he and his team used the station’s heritage to inform its urban regeneration. The aim was to preserve the Victorian station’s character. Originally, the Victorians had to come over a canal immediately north of the station, so the platforms were elevated creating a huge undercroft underneath at street level. One of the Eureka moments was deciding to revitalize the undercroft, making it a public space that had not existed before and giving transparency through the station. For Ian, this project demonstrated how creative thinking, an appreciation for heritage, clever technical analysis, and a desire to combine old and new, enables us to create thriving, rejuvenated spaces for the benefit of local communities, businesses and visitors alike. What an inspiring day with our massive #DontWasteBuildings cohort in Birmingham! I hope others will agree that our first Sustaining the City Summit was a great success. I am especially grateful to Leanne Tritton and Richard Nelson for organising so much of the day, and to our amazing hosts Dr. Michael Dring and Dr Jemma Browne from the Birmingham School Architecture, Howells, Matt Blakeley from RIBA, and John Christophers RIBA. We started the day with case studies from #TheCustardFactory and #TyphooTeaBuilding, and discussion with Simon Delahunty-Forrest on the challenges faced by local authorities when balancing climate action targets with economic revitalisation, and embracing a city's past while looking towards its future. I was really struck by the commitment to be a layered city, one that encourages bringing buildings into the present rather than erasing them from the cityscape. We followed the morning session with a tour through #Digbeth, highlighting restoration works of buildings, daylighted canals, and future projects, including a potential Sky Garden on previously unused rail aqueduct, connecting the former industrial district to the city centre. The afternoon summit brought together DWB's core mission of embodied carbon accounting in the construction industry with a more ephemeral concept: #EmbodiedMemory. We don't save buildings because we cannot let go of the past, but rather because a city without a past lacks soul. Existing buildings represent "carbon at rest", when we wake these sleeping giants it is at our own peril. The construction industry already accounts for 62% of the UK's annual waste. The only way to reduce this scope is to let existing buildings stay at rest, or at the very least, to minimise how much we disturb them. Using a light touch to gently awaken them, retaining all that is possible and being thoughtful about how we rebuild is key. That said, I'm always moved by Imandeep Kaur's challenge for us to radically reimagine what is possible, not just in the built environment, but in our relationships with place and community. If we activate our radical imagination, can we acknowledge that we are at a tipping point while also making the choice to jump and swim towards a more just and inclusive future? Or will we wait until others push us over a cliff edge on their terms? I vote for making the leap! To paraphrase Scott McAulay, we need to learn to build life boats, not coffins.

Breaking news: the Advanced Manufacturing Research Facility (AMRF) First Building was named the Most Outstanding Innovation Project by the Western Sydney Leadership Dialogue last night, setting the stage for a story that will reshape Australia's urban future. The first building for the new city of Bradfield in Western Sydney — Australia's first new city in 100 years — the AMRF houses a cutting-edge shared services platform designed to drive innovation in the manufacturing sector. This facility represents a pivotal step in the NSW Government's economic strategy, positioning Bradfield as a hub of advanced industry and opportunity. Congratulations to our client, Bradfield Development Authority, project partners Northrop Consulting Engineers and Taylor | Australia, and our talented design team. The development of Bradfield City Centre, alongside the Western Sydney Aerotropolis region and Western Sydney International Airport, is set to redefine the region. We eagerly anticipate officially unveiling the building early next year and showcasing the opportunities this transformative project will unlock. The urgency is clear—how we manage the buildings already in our cities will play a key role in balancing the needs of people, neighborhoods, and the environment. It all begins with curiousity and the will to change.   Last week, we were pleased to co-host an in-house event on #transformation at our Copenhagen headquarters, in collaboration with Arup. We gathered our colleagues across the industry to discuss transforming stranded assets into valuable real estate that benefits both people and the planet.   The event featured a keynote by Arup Fellow Michael Beaven, who delivered an inspiring overview of global approaches to adaptive reuse and sustainable transformation. This was followed by an engaging panel discussion where both Danish and international practitioners shared their perspectives.   The atmosphere in the room reflected how committed everyone was to continuing the dialogue until solutions are found.
