Kelly Fitzwater, our Head of Global Supply Chain shares her views on The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM)'s announcement of the first carbon-crediting methodologies that meet its high-integrity Core Carbon Principles (CCPs): https://lnkd.in/eP9cxbdP The CCP label can now be used on an estimated 27 million #carboncredits issued by projects that tackle potent greenhouse gases by capturing methane from landfill sites and by destroying ozone-depleting foams and refrigerant gases from discarded equipment such as refrigerators and air conditioners. Another 27 categories of carbon credits, representing over 50% of the market, remain under active assessment. This comes just a week after the announcement of the U.S. government's Joint Statement of Policy and new Principles for Responsible Participation in Voluntary Carbon Markets (VCMs), which underscored the significance of high-quality carbon credits in corporate #decarbonization strategies. #ICVCM #sustainability #corporateresponsibility

What's CDR? It's taking harmful carbon out of the atmosphere and sequestering it (so that it does not go back) to mitigate the increase in temperatures and extreme weather events that we are all experiencing increasingly frequently. It's not a silver bullet. We still want to reduce emissions in any way we can. But CDR is an essential contributor to helping us get to net zero and, hopefully, in the future, reducing the total carbon in the atmosphere. We have dramatically overdrawn our accounts with nature. Emissions reduction is about reducing the annual deficit. Carbon removal is about reducing the debt accumulated over the years. United States Cold Storage is committed to reducing its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. And it's in good company—or should we say "companies." USCS officially joined the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in September 2023 and became one of more than 6,000 private businesses committed to halve GHG emissions by 2030 and achieve net zero emissions by 2050. SBTi is a partnership between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). USCS has been on its own, similar targets-based journey since 2020. In just the last few years alone, the company has completed its own Materiality report, an Environmental Impact Assessment as well as an emissions inventory assessment for Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 levels. 🚨 SBTi's game-changing announcement is set to revolutionize the carbon markets and redefine the Net-Zero standard. SBTi's recent announcement now allows the use of carbon offsets to meet Scope 3 abatement targets! This marks a significant shift in its approach towards addressing Scope 3 emissions. Until now, SBTi only allowed the use of carbon credits to offset 10% of the residual unavoidable emissions after a company has successfully met 90% of its net-zero target. What does this mean for the Net-Zero standard and the carbon markets? Expect the demand for carbon credits to take off! 🚀 With companies under SBTi targets emitting a staggering 30 billion tonnes of CO2 (27 billion from Scope 3 alone!), even a 10% offset allowance could create a demand for 2.7 billion credits. 📈 Even if all companies with targets do not choose to exhaust their offsetting quota (yet to be defined by SBTi), we can expect the demand addition to be substantial. 📣 A Remarkable Development Towards High Integrity was Unveiled at the Carbon Market 🌍 On the 4th April The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) announced first CCP-Eligible Carbon Credit Programs. It is a significant development for the #VoluntrayCarbonMarket.    ACR at Winrock International, Climate Action Reserve and Gold Standard met the CCP criteria for effective governance, transparency, tracking and robust independent third-party validation and verification.
