Do manufacturers need to sacrifice competitive advantage to achieve supply chain resilience? Last week, I attended the Aerospace Technology Institute #DestinationZero conference, where supply chain resilience was a major topic of discussion. This got me thinking about how innovation currently works in supply chains. Today, we leverage processes and technologies to gain a competitive advantage to secure or retain new business. However, if we are to achieve supply chain resilience, does the future supply chain model need to evolve? Caveat, this is about all industry and not just Aerospace. Do we need to consider trading competitive advantage for standard technologies and processes, which would allow for faster scalability for mitigations or rate increases? For that to work the supply chain would need to be judged foremost on its supply chain resilience factors (quality, delivery and sustainability credentials) rather than cost. Is that really going to happen. But what would happen to #innovation? Isn’t that the role of High Value Manufacturing Catapult or national technology centers? Do they need to be the integral cog for standardisation of supply chain innovation, incubating the latest technologies, proving them to maturity, and then disseminating them into the supply chain. Would this centralised approach be more or less efficient approach to national funding. While this isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution, it presents a real opportunity to exploit the benefits of more agile technologies like additive manufacturing where the material and finished part is created in one gile manufacturing system rather than a global supply chain. I’d be really interested in hearing thoughts on this. Great panel discussion Alex Hickson #additivemanufacturing #sustainability #advancedmanufacturing #supplychainresilience
