📚 Let’s face it—academia’s "publish or perish" culture is real, and it’s tough. The constant demand to publish, secure grants, and chase impact factors can create overwhelming pressure. Remind yourself that quality matters more than quantity. Focus on producing meaningful research that truly contributes to your field, rather than chasing arbitrary publication counts. I help academics manage these pressures by building strategies to focus on impactful work while maintaining a healthy balance. I can help navigate the academic landscape without burning out. #PublishOrPerish #Academia #ResearchImpact #WellBeing

The Making Academic. Calling for chapter proposals for a new edited book in my Routledge book series that showcases self-care and wellbeing in higher education from a proactive perspective and featuring visual narratives. This call is due 30 April 2024. Our ways of knowing, being, becoming and doing are persistently challenged within higher education institutions, as ways of understanding new or alternative perspectives continue to unfold. While there is still a requirement for those who work inside universities to possess rigorous and scholarly practices, there is also an increasing necessity for them to have a diverse and fluid set of dispositions to consider and engage with the complexities of the world we currently find ourselves. It is in these circumstances we have seen increasing emergence of the ‘making academic’ who fuse and intertwine hands-on creative or material activities with intellectual pursuits to explore their particular field of expertise and or other aspects of their lives such as their well-being. In this edited book we hear from a range of making academics to explore and understand how these scholars blend intellect with craftsmanship and artistry, finding fulfillment and renewal through various types of creative expression. We are embarking on a journey to uncover the profound impact of being a ‘making academic’ has on personal growth and scholarly endeavour. In keeping with the sentiment of making and the format of this book, we invite contributors to provide both a visual image which is accompanied by a succinct text-based account (3000 words) that works in unison with the image to convey the essence of each scholar’s unique experience about being a making academic. JoJo writes a dissertation, week 2! This week’s work involves getting a pilot tutoring program off the ground! Which is great—I love getting tutoring programs up and running! Why do I get to do fun things like running a tutoring program while writing my dissertation rather than drowning in a massive literature review? I’m so glad you asked! (Don’t worry I’m doing a massive literature review too!) Action Research is a methodology that acknowledges the impossibility of objective research design. In non academia terms: WE CARE ABOUT THE PROBLEMS WE’RE STUDYING. After we interview participants and study a problem, we work together to implement an action step to try to ameliorate the problem. Non academia translation: WE TRY TO HELP FIX THE PROBLEMS WE’RE STUDYING. My problem is about inequality in higher education. One way that shows up is that grad students (many of whom work) don’t have time to get tutoring. So, I’m going to fix that! #JoJosDoctoralAdventure week 2! #ABDisNotATitle (Yes, I’m doing this. Sharing my journey helps me with accountability, and maybe it will help someone else who is on a similar journey!) (Photo of Ginger Huber from Women’s Health Magazine.)

Accessible v Academic I was at Birkbeck, University of London a couple of weekends ago and one of the topics that we discussed was 'authorial voice'. Writing our literature reviews in a way that matches academic expectations. Now this may be controversial (what else is LinkedIn for, right?) but I think this is contry to making our research accessible. I have been reading academic articles almost constantly for the last 4.5 years and there are still some that I struggle with. It seems like they are deliberately trying to make it harder. Latin phrases left, right, and centre! I would love to think that anything I was lucky enough to publish would be understandable by, at very least, a practitioner in the field. At the end of the day, that is the only way our research is going to make a difference! Academics, I would love to hear your views. How do you feel about the accessibility of your work? Would you like more freedom in the way you word your publications? #Academic #Research #ThesisPainAlready #OccupationalPsychology #BusinessPsychology #Accessibility
