Kimberley Parry is In Vitro Team Leader at RXCELERATE LIMITED. Here she shares her thoughts on #WomenInStem for International Day of Women and Girls in Science. In your opinion, what can be done to encourage more women to pursue leadership roles in scientific research and academia? "It’s so important to recognise the advantages that diversity brings. Campaigns that celebrate women in science and keep the conversation alive are so important; but as individuals, we all have a responsibility to call out discriminatory behaviour if we see it. "Until we reach a place of true equality, positive action is needed to create opportunities that level the playing field. "Workplaces can show their dedication to this by appointing female leaders, creating mentorship opportunities, and adopting policies and initiatives (e.g. surrounding women’s health and parenthood) that enable women to thrive professionally."   Looking ahead, what do you hope to see in terms of gender equality and inclusivity in the scientific community in the coming years? "Short-term I hope we continue to see a rise in the proportion of women in leadership positions. Long-term, I’d love for ‘female leaders’ to just be called ‘leaders’, and for ‘women in science’ to just be ‘scientists’."   As we celebrate International Women and Girls in Science Day, what advice would you give to young girls aspiring to pursue careers in STEM fields? "As a mum, I’ve realised how gender stereotypes are often ingrained from such a young age. We even bought our daughter a nursery rhyme book that addresses this, in which Little Bo Peep is in FULL command of her sheep! "My advice is to follow whatever career path excites you, and don’t let gender stereotyping (or bias of any kind) put you off. Instead, use it as fuel to make that fire in your belly burn even brighter." #GirlsinStem #WomenLeadership #IDWGS

To celebrate, we interviewed Rosalia Castiñeira Suárez, our Senior Software Engineer, about her role and what #IWD means to her as a woman in tech: QC: How has being a woman influenced your journey in the tech industry? Rosalia: I have not felt that being a woman conditioned my career in the technology industry. I have always felt valued and respected by my colleagues. QC: What initiatives or strategies can help promote gender diversity and inclusivity within the tech sector? Rosalia: I believe it's essential to place more trust in the capabilities of women and provide them with opportunities to tackle challenges. Now it's undeniable that specific disparities persist in our industry, I advocate for: ⭐Implementing selection processes that do not disclose gender information, especially during technical evaluations. ⭐Increasing young people's awareness of our sector, clarifying our roles and contributions to society, and demonstrating how they can find their place within it and achieve a work-life balance. QC: As a woman in tech, what advice would you give to other women who aspire to pursue a career in this field? Rosalia: I would encourage her to forge ahead confidently. She has chosen a sector with no limits; you can work in the area you want, and it is a myth that it is for boys. We can, and we certainly do exceptionally well! QC: Lastly, what message would you like to convey to fellow women in tech and the industry on this International Women's Day? Rosalia: Congratulations to all the remarkable women who strive tirelessly every day to achieve their best, especially those who balance their commitments to career and family without ever giving up. Insights from a Round Table Discussion: Empowering Women in IT and Digitalization I am excited to share that I participated in a thought-provoking round table discussion at Microsoft today with Joacim Damgard Ingrid Heschl Julia Katovsky Doris Lippert centered on the initiative #shegoesdigital which supports gender diversity in IT and digitalization. #RHIMagnesita is one of the companies participating in the 2nd round, under the patronage of Austrian First Lady Doris Schmidauer. Participants passionately discussed the need to break down stereotypes that often deter women from pursuing careers in IT. By showcasing successful female role models and challenging preconceived notions, we can create an inclusive environment that encourages more women to join and thrive in the industry. The round table highlighted the significance of educational initiatives that promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) subjects among girls from an early age. Encouraging girls to pursue these fields can address the gender gap and ensure a pipeline of talented women in IT and digitalization. Advocacy for gender diversity and visibility of women's achievements in IT and digitalization were underscored as critical components. Amplifying success stories and recognizing the contributions of women in the industry can inspire others and challenge existing norms. Following International Day of Women and Girls in Science yesterday, I’ve been reflecting on the remarkable journey of women in STEM. This field, once predominantly led by men, has seen incredible strides since I first started my career. From my experiences as an engineer, I've witnessed the power of representation and mentorship in empowering the next generation of women.
