Let's discuss a reality in the software engineering world. Two engineers, same skills, same job. One earns 30 LPA, the other earns 5 LPA. Why the huge difference? It's not always about technical ability. Often, it's about the opportunities we access early in our careers. I started out earning 4.5 LPA. A friend of mine was making 30 LPA at the same time. The main difference? He graduated from an IIT; I graduated from a Tier-3 college. But here's what I've learned: Your starting point doesn't define your entire journey. 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐬: 𝐌𝐲 𝐉𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐲𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐨𝐟𝐭𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 Growing up, I always looked up to my dad, an electrical engineer, and wanted to follow in his footsteps. I pursued electrical engineering in school, thinking it was a safe choice and aligned with my passion for technology. However, during my third year, I discovered my true passion for software engineering and started learning computer science subjects. Initially, I thought I would end up working for companies that combine software and electronics, but I needed to prepare myself. When placement season began, I applied to companies right away and landed an interview with American Express in my very first attempt. Never did I imagine that I would receive interview calls from other big tech companies like Microsoft. A senior advised me to keep applying, which encouraged me to push past my own doubts and insecurities. Despite my initial struggles with imposter syndrome, these opportunities made me believe in my skills and potential. Recently, I visited an IT company and had the opportunity to interact with some people. Naturally, as someone passionate about technology, I was curious to know about the tech stack they use. So, I asked them, "What tech stack do you use?" To my surprise, the response I received was, "We hire only on-campus students." At first, I was puzzled by this answer. 😔 I'm lost, but isn't the grind that shapes us in tech? I understand that feeling, fresh out of college with a degree in hand and the world seemingly on pause. It's only been a few months since I've graduated, and I won't sugarcoat it—I'm still on the hunt for that first big break in tech. It's not always easy. There are days when I feel all on my own, or so tired I can hardly think. Sometimes, I'm plain scared. But then I get back to work, and it feels like I'm doing something right. My feelings change a lot, but what I do each day, adds up. So, for anyone who's just finished school and is trying to find their way, you're not alone. I get it. It's tough not knowing what's coming next. But here's what I've learned: Just keep moving. Apply for that job, learn that new skill, tackle that project. We're all in this together. In the end, we can't control the job market or predict the future. But we can control how much effort we put in. So let's put in the work and be proud of it. One thing I’ve learned in my tech career is the importance of constantly sharpening and honing your skills. It’s similar to my life as a collegiate athlete: you’re always looking for ways to improve and be consistent in your craft. 48% of tech professionals felt that a lack of progression was the main reason they sought new challenges. One interesting finding from our recent Technology Hiring Report is that career progression is a major priority for technologists when choosing a new role this year. As someone who talks to engineers every day, I've learned that progression means different things to different people. So, what does progression mean to you? Is it a new job title? A higher salary? Or a new challenge to tackle, the quality of your peers, or day-to-day learning to boost your skills? A common motivation I hear is, “I’m currently at level X (job title) and I want to be at level Y in my next job.” But, as with most of my partners, structures and responsibilities vary. Not all progression is visible on a job spec or company ladder. Sometimes, a move that seems sideways can actually be a huge step forward in terms of gaining knowledge and preparing for that step up.
