What’s the difference between Social Licence to Operate and Social Value? The difference between Social Licence to Operate (SLO) and Social Value lies in both tone and approach. SLO implies a business is granted permission to operate, often focusing on reducing harm or managing risks to avoid negative impacts on the community. In contrast, Social Value takes a proactive stance, emphasising positive contributions to community well-being and fostering long-term relationships. Small businesses naturally embed social value through deep local ties and ethical practices. Big companies can learn a lot from this approach to build meaningful social impact. 2025 is going to be a fun year with BUILD, and I would like to share that we have numerous opportunities to volunteer, engage and/or contribute here in the Boston community kicking off in January (and onward!). We'd love you to join us in helping student entrepreneurs reimagine their future possibilities, and we need the good folks in the Boston business community to help us make a positive impact and help BUILDers realize their potential. We have very cool opportunities to engage with BUILD students, from serving an "investor" to hear their pitch for seed funding (which we have set aside already), a Business Plan Competition judge or an Idea Pitch judge. Throughout January, lots of opportunities to give back -- it doesn't take much, but it goes a long way! Why does a diverse team bring innovative ideas? 🧠💡 This question is getting a lot of attention lately. Our foundation, which started less than three years ago, now has over 1,100 community members. These folks have come to Canada from more than 40 different countries. They are here to learn about the Canadian culture, the business scene, and how to start and grow small businesses, both locally and online. Our team of volunteers is also diverse, bringing a mix of cultural backgrounds to our leadership. This diversity gives us valuable insights and advantages in a few key ways: 👀 People from different countries approach problem-solving in their own unique ways. 👀 Individuals with different work experiences and life stories bring different perspectives. 👀 Various cultures react differently to similar situations. These experiences have shown us how important it is to listen and be curious about different viewpoints.
