The American Association of Interpreters and Translators in Education (AAITE) has created free Best Practices guides for interpreters, staff and parents in education settings. The need for professional spoken language services in schools is increasing in part due to #migration and #refugee resettlement and states have federal and state language access requirements for their growing limited English proficient (LEP) populations. Language access can improve equity, English language proficiency and outcomes for LEP #students. Download the free AAITE guides here: https://lnkd.in/g3ZkdjQH. 🧊🏔️While it's generally not considered polite to comment on someone's accent in a professional context, a shark bed of attitudes lies concealed beneath the iceberg! 🦈🦈🦈 Global professionals are routinely subjected to comments like this, without sufficient recourse in the workplace to address the underlying issues: 😞 "You couldn't really work in law with an accent like that" 😞 "Your level of English isn't really sufficient" (These descriptions have been shared by professionals with level C2/C1 English, and even if their pronunciation is influenced by their mother tongue, it is not a reflection on their level of English.) I have also heard: 😞 "I am not sure whether I am fully understood or taken seriously by my superiors" (this from a high-flying Frenchman working in investment management in London). It is heartbreaking to hear such comments in 2024, when these attitudes are neither right nor necessary in the workplace. Do you know that such comments generate linguistic insecurity among highly competent professionals? As a result, people who have made the effort for years to learn English and gain certifications begin to doubt their skills. They no longer dare to speak up or apply for management positions. If they are promoted to managing international teams, they quickly find themselves out of their depth and unsure whether they are fully respected. Isabelle Cottenet 🟣 and I are delighted to share with you our in-depth discussion on: 💡why accent is a DEI matter 💡how these issues present in the workplace 📉the impact on business 💡what steps HR professionals need to be taking to ensure the comfort and respect of their global workforce using English and French as second languages.
