Now that I am.a lot older, I realise increasingly that the act of 'counting on' should not be primarily about achievements and one's capabilities per se. Rather, we count on those whom we know we can trust their hearts, character, what they believe in and stand for consistently. It is the reliability, dependability and honesty of others that causes us to trust them after a period observation and testing. Similarly, that's what our nation needs. In terms of first world status infrastructure, systems and processes, we have tons of these. What we really need are those who do not run or complain at the first sign of trouble, who are willing to invest time and energy in the lives of others and have a sense of genuine rootedness to their families and others who do care for them. Mere content can only impart head knowledge and students often write them off cynically as propaganda. There is nothing as powerful and influential as real life individuals who practice what they preach and where we know that their hearts are in the right place. On May 24, the Forum on Building up China’s Cultural Strength 2024 continued at the Shenzhen World Exhibition & Convention Center. During the Sub-Forum on Cultural Strength and Development Opportunities of the Greater Bay Area (GBA), Louis Kwok Lit Yu, Former President of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, compared culture to a pot of soup. He explained that Lingnan culture and "Bay Area culture" are like a soup with various ingredients. By properly utilizing these elements with the right temperature, mixing, fermentation, and accumulation, Bay Area culture can quickly develop into a rich and vibrant broth.
