Communicating the importance of your issues to legislators can be difficult, especially with complicated topics that have many moving pieces. Here are some of our favorite tips to make every word count: 🧠 Tell a story! Facts are great, but we all remember the impact of a personal story. A story from a constituent in their district could go a long way. 📊 Know who you’re talking to! Tailor your ask of the legislator depending on their public stance and voting record. ✉️ Follow up! Send a thank you letter or share a thank you in-person. It will go a long way to keep the conversation moving forward. What tips do you have? Share them in the comments below.

The Munk Debates took over Roy Thompson Hall earlier this week. In the age of doom-scrolling, split-screen yelling matches and hot takes, this org does good work to keep substantive and civil debate alive and well. The format is refreshing: 2 vs. 2. One side arguing "pro", the other "con". As an audience, you vote on questions before the debate begins. One question stuck out: "are you open to changing your mind based on what is presented tonight?" . I love this question. I like how it reminds you to park your pre-determined opinions and be receptive to the info you are hearing. It reveals the potential swing vote in the room. We often ask a version of it when we facilitate executive teams / present strategy at the Board level ( "if you disagree, can you be convinced?" or "what would you need to be convinced?"). Help us strengthen the argument with - and get real feedback from - the swing vote in the room.

It’s been 15+ years since I had a policy job that regularly brought me to Capitol Hill for meetings with Members of Congress. Well, today, I took time off from my business and headed to the Hill for a meeting with Hill staff to advocate for something deeply important to me. It was such an important meeting, and I think we effectively got our point across. Will Congress do what I want them to do? Maybe. But for sure, one office is better informed because I spoke up. I’m grateful to live in our Nation’s Capital, which allowed me to easily head over to the congressional buildings. On my way over, I overheard a man walking near me, taking a call on his phone: “I’ve got 30 seconds. I’m in Washington, lobbying Congress.” That’s right, he traveled to DC to advocate for issues important to him. Each of you can also take time away from your job and advocate for your important issues, right where you are. Pick up the phone and call your Members of Congress — dial (202) 224-3121 to reach the House switchboard and (202) 224-3121 to reach the Senate switchboard. Or google the district offices for your Members of Congress and set up a meeting there. Or look at their events schedule, and show up to share your opinion. And most importantly, VOTE! Every time there’s an election. #vote #advocate #speakup #shareyourstory
