Author, "The Lessons Donors Teach Us: Memorable Episodes in Donor-Centric Fundraising" | President, Intentional Consulting LLC
Nonprofit leaders following a donor-centric approach to fundraising strive to keep the donor central in each and every aspect of the philanthropic exchange. They realize the exchange is a transaction of trust with a funder. Where all involved fulfill a promise to do their part in advancing the greater good. Guiding a donor-centric minded nonprofit leader on her or his side of the exchange is Commandment # 13: BRAND is the nonprofit’s promise with donors. These leaders know a BRAND is not a nonprofit’s slick marketing slogan. Nor is it the graphic, font or color selected for an agency’s logo. Rather, they understand a nonprofit’s BRAND is defined each time a fundraising transaction satisfies the social contract that agency has made with supporters. These leaders are aware that as long as the nonprofit exists, donors expect the nonprofit’s BRAND to be upheld—obligating the agency to do its part in adding value to the community. While they may seek to enhance the BRAND with funders—promising to provide what is necessary, noble and nonnegotiable for all—these leaders are circumspect. For Commandment # 13 is ever before them. And they only make promises the nonprofit can keep. Follow along in this series for my thoughts on Commandment # 14. And check out my book—“The Lessons Donors Teach Us: Memorable Episodes in Donor-Centric Fundraising”—available on Amazon at the link below. https://a.co/d/hyFBBG0

Last week I had the chance to learn about nonprofit fundraising from a marketing perspective at the Nonprofit Marketing Summit. I'm sharing my 5 top takeaways (and am happy to also share the 20+ pages of notes I took--just message me!) from nonprofit sector leaders Cameron Ripley, Floyd Jones, Rob Wu, Brady Josephson, and Stacy Huston: ❓ Don't just ask "Who is my biggest donor?" but also ask "Who has been my longest donor?" to honor and engage contributions beyond ones that are financial. 🤝 48% of people don't trust nonprofits. Peer to peer fundraising is a solution because it enables a transfer of trust through personal relationships and affinities. 💸 The vast majority of nonprofits that met or exceeded their fundraising goal in 2023 were the nonprofits that had implemented recurring giving (data from the forthcoming Nonprofit Acceleration Report, to be published in May). 🗣 Data from charity: water tells us that recurring donors are most likely to leave in the first 90 days, so a series of communications should be targeted to this period. 🧠 When seeking corporate funding, identify what the company's pain points are and brainstorm how your nonprofit can provide a solution. #NMS2024

TEDx Speaker | 6x Webby Winner | Award-Winning, Purpose-Driven Initiatives, Creator of The CRAFT Method™
In the heart of the nonprofit sector lies a transformative potential that goes beyond the mere allocation of resources; it's about fundamentally reshaping the way we approach our missions and the societal issues we aim to address. The time is ripe for us to pivot from a scarcity mindset, which has long dictated our strategies around fundraising, campaigns, and engagement with corporate donors, to one of abundance and mutual growth. As leaders and changemakers, our ultimate ambition should not solely be the sustainability of our own organizations but the holistic resolution of the issues at hand. This vision requires an ethos of collaboration over competition. True impact is cultivated when we dare to transcend traditional boundaries, sharing knowledge and resources freely with fellow organizations that echo our aspirations. The notion that acknowledging and supporting others in our space might dilute our own support base is a vestige of outdated thinking. Fear of losing a donor by highlighting collaborative efforts is a clear indication of playing it small. Instead, we must embrace the principle that being a relentless resource for others not only amplifies our collective impact but also strengthens our own foundations. Let us remember, "A rising tide lifts all boats." In fostering an ecosystem where knowledge and resources flow unimpeded among partners, we not only enhance our individual capacity for change but also accelerate the pace at which we can address the monumental challenges before us. The journey towards significant societal transformation is a shared one—let's walk it together, with open hearts and unbridled ambition. Thank you Erin O. for attending my session and sharing some gold nuggets with others! I am always so grateful when someone in the audience is inspired enough to share. What a gift. #NMS2024 #NonprofitLeadership #CollaborationOverCompetition #AbundanceMindset #SocialImpact
