I don’t know much about underway replenishment operations, but I imagine they are challenging even in fair conditions. Any opportunity to make their planning and execution more efficient will have a significant operational impact. This article describes the use of a #SBIR to implement a solution that could have traditionally gone to a more established defense contractor, it’s a very creative solution by this #Navy #acquisitions team. I would be curious to learn more about how the GENISYS suite of applications maintains connectivity and security in such a dispersed (and potentially contested) operating environment.

The renewables + storage microgrid at the Army's Fort Hunter Liggett FHL installation here in CA is particularly interesting as it was designed and built to provide up to 14 days of power in the event that external grid power is lost. This resiliency requirement applies to nearly all military installations. A new long-duration energy storage system was commissioned this week at the Contingency Basing Integration Training Evaluation Center (CBITEC) at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Called an energy warehouse, it will demonstrate how long-duration energy storage (LDES) systems, and specifically iron flow battery technology, can reduce the military’s consumption of diesel as well as improve energy resilience at contingency bases. The energy warehouse was delivered by ESS Tech, a manufacturer of commercial and utility-scale LDES systems, and it replaces an ESS prototype that was installed in 2016. ESS’ energy warehouse is a containerized long-duration energy storage system powered by iron flow batteries. LDES systems can store energy for long periods for future dispatch, often as long as eight to 12 hours, compared to shorter-duration lithium ion chemistries. The energy warehouse was integrated into a tactical microgrid at CBITEC that is used to simulate the variety of conditions that can be encountered at contingency bases, which include forward operating bases, remote installations and temporary bases erected to provide disaster relief. Most contingency bases today are powered by diesel generators, but transporting the fuel necessary to maintain reliable power puts military personnel at risk, especially in active combat zones. The demonstration is expected to prove that adding an LDES system to a contingency base microgrid can provide energy resilience, optimize the use of diesel generators and reduce diesel fuel consumption by up to 40%. The Army Corps of Engineers is not the only U.S. military group testing the possibilities of LDES-powered microgrids. With funding from the Department of Defense’s Innovation Unit, a similar system will be installed at Stewart Air National Guard Base in Newburgh, New York. It is sad to me that the movement towards a just global energy transition involves things like this, tearing apart pre existing systems because of the battle for dominance of the energy market and the energy data management market is so cut throat. My biggest hope is that if governments are going to be investing in clean energy tech only to tear it out shortly later that all those precious metals mined out of the earth go to recycling plants and any investments in storage come from recycled lithium instead of opening up tons of new local mines. The issue of BMS and Cyber security is something our industry needs to take seriously just like the safety while operating these (thermal runaway ect) but I personally hope we as an industry can utilize a mindful eye towards cultural collaboration that can help heal the planet faster because we are running out of time to reverse all the damage to our planet and this sort of thing just slows us down.

The United States Department of Defense (DoD) announced at Fort Liberty today, a first-of-its-kind partnership with the Duke Energy Corporation to power five military installations in North and South Carolina with carbon-free electricity. The fie installations are: US Army Fort Liberty, United States Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in North Carolina, and Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina. As part of this agreement, DoD will be the exclusive purchaser of all output generated by two new solar facilities in South Carolina. Through this action, DoD is delivering on President Joe Biden's goal to power the federal government with 100 percent clean energy by 2030, and to do so in ways that are good for the taxpayer and the American economy.
