An Accountant Running The phrase "you can't have your cake and eat it too" is often used to describe a situation where you cannot simultaneously have two desirable things that are mutually exclusive.  However, in the context of an owner-managed business, this may not always hold true.  One example of this is when a small business is able to secure the financial expertise of a Portfolio FD while only paying a fraction of the cost of hiring a full-time employee. Before Cory Grothaus, CPA interviewed for a corporate accounting job in Chick-fil-A, Inc.'s Financial Services department, he was skeptical about whether the company’s culture actually matched the values the organization was known for. Read his perspective on how working at the Corporate Support Center proved to be exactly what he had hoped for.  Q: How would you describe the culture of care at Chick-fil-A? “What stands out the most to me is the emphasis on relationships. We often say here that we are ‘Better Together’ and that couldn’t be more true.  On the days that I’m working in the office, our team is always together – whether collaborating on accounting projects or going to lunch together in the dining hall. We are not only building relationships centered on the work, but there is emphasis placed on our personal lives too – knowing about each other’s families, interests and milestones. I can tell that everyone really cares about each other as a person – you're not just an employee or a number – far from that.” Q: What impact does that culture have on you, personally? “I find everyone to be so welcoming that it really puts me at ease. Honestly, I consider myself to have somewhat of an introverted personality – so, for example, I may not always be leading conversations in larger group settings. But everyone at Chick-fil-A is so kind that it allows me to bring my authentic self to those environments and still be very relational. It feels good. Then on days when I’m working from home, I get the space to recharge, and I easily connect with my coworkers virtually, as needed.  As a Senior Corporate Accountant working in financial reporting for the international side of our business, my work can provide exciting challenges. There will always be aspects of accounting that can feel repetitive. But here at Chick-fil-A, I enjoy the work more because of the caring working environment and the people I work with. I am a Public Accounting Audit Senior. Should I stay until Manager? This may be a controversial one… 😶 If you have a personal goal of staying until Manager or are flirting with the idea of becoming Partner, the answer is absolutely stay until Manager. If you are staying until Manager to get a big bump in pay and have a million doors open for you when you leave, you might want to reconsider: 1. Public Accounting Firms in the past two years have started to pay at market rates, if not above (as they should). Therefore, oftentimes when people leave, they find themselves looking at a lateral move or a very small bump. 2. Due to the way teams are structured, there are simply fewer Manager + openings than Senior positions. Therefore, you are likely facing a longer search process to find a company that excites you. 3. More and more we are seeing hiring managers request candidates with public accounting roots and some industry experience for Manager + positions. If you are a Manager reading this and don’t see yourself staying until Partner, you’ll still be able to find a new job that excites you! Meet the Team ✨ Nick Cook: Finance Manager What does a typical day look like? Working in Finance means there are tasks that are time critical and happen daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annually such as Management Accounts, CIS, Tax Returns etc. Monday to Thursday is pretty task consistent with bank reconciliations, sales and purchase ledger activities, credit control, expenses management. Fridays are more focused on financial reporting and forecasting. Do you have any hidden talents or hobbies? Having recently secured a local allotment, this has become a new hobby, it is good for both physical and mental well-being. Harvesting what has been grown is really satisfying. What’s one thing you are really good at? I am certainly a live to eat kind of person so eating good food is an important part of my life. I am told by my family and friends my cooking is better than what they eat out, so guess you could say I am quite good. What is your favourite bad joke? I have a good sense of humour and like to tell jokes and quips, I do laugh at them myself more than others, so they cannot be bad right? What’s a weird fact you happen to know? Not exactly weird but I did manage to complete a marathon many years ago. Mostly walking but running when arriving at check points! A good 6+ hours if I remember correctly. What’s your favourite food or cuisine? I have lived and worked in the Middle East which has a diverse range of cuisines such as grilled meats, vegetarian option like tabouleh and baba ghanoush and great curries. But a good steak is always a spot-on choice too. What’s your favourite accomplishment in your career so far? Working for the Foreign Office as a Financial Secretary to an Ambassador. This was a great experience, both from a career perspective and on a personal level too. What’s your favourite thing about your role in the team? The collaboration with other teams here at Décor – Business Development & Sales, Commercials, Operations and Factory.
