Have you fired an employee very quickly from first employing them, because their work wasn’t up to standard? I want to stop you right there….. Did you look at how you were training the person? Did you have a conversation with the person about what support the person needed? Or did you simply shy away from the difficult conversation and think “Oh well not been with us long so let them go because they’re just a problem” If you did that, would you have considered how much the recruitment had cost in the first place? Did you consider what training you had already invested in for the employee? When you look at how it costs to recruit and train a new employee it can be up to around 9 months of their salary. (and many sources estimate far higher than that) This includes the time leaders and managers invest in supporting the HR-specific roles of the hiring process. What you really need to do is have the conversation, spell out what needs improvement, agree on an action plan with training support, and then review the points. Finding the right talent to fill an open position can be challenging. Even with a vast talent pool, it's tough to know whether a new hire will be a good fit. However, what happens when you have the opportunity to rehire a former employee? Is this a good idea? Rehiring former team members comes with benefits, such as familiarity with company operations, which can significantly reduce onboarding time and help them integrate quickly. Yet, there are notable drawbacks, too. Consider how the previous employment ended. Animosity towards management or unresolved resentment can affect team morale and cause bigger problems down the road. Additionally, there's always the concern that they might leave again, making it hard to fully invest in their return. Ultimately, there isn't a one-size-fits-all answer for rehiring former employees.
