A beautiful and fascinating entry into our 📸 Subsurface Snapshot with PaleoScan™ 📸 campaign this week! Emma Le Gall and Benjamin Durot approach the challenge of wind farm placement by integrating CPT (Cone Penetration Test) data with PaleoScan’s RGT Model to identify geotechnical provinces within the shallow subsurface. By examining areas with similar thicknesses and mechanical properties, they have accurately distinguished these provinces, which may not correlate directly with traditional stratigraphic units. It's important to note, even within a single stratigraphic unit, there can be variations in geotechnical properties. It is this variability that creates multiple geotechnical sub-units within what could appear to be a uniform layer on more conventional seismic analysis techniques. Through the integration of cone resistance (an indicator of shear strength) and friction ratio (which helps to understand soil lithology), PaleoScan™’s Property Modelling tool has provided a clear and precise identification of these geotechnical provinces, delineating geospatial variations and optimizing windfarm site selection.
