ITL516 In this post, I'll discuss the math standard covered in the Week 4 Assignment, as well as the social studies and physical education standards I took into account when creating my project-based or problem-based interactive lesson. The overall goal is to show students real world examples that we know the students will run into in the near future. Some of the functional skills that I have in mind or have spoken about are money, time management, measurements and calculations for discounts, etc. The overall reason for these functional skills are for students that will be going to the next steps in their educational career and in some cases that means going to Adult Transition Programs where they will continue on with their education and or for students to sharpen their skills.  For this Physical Education part of the lesson I'd like the students to go over locomotor skills that will help them develop spatial awareness, their balance, visual awareness and their coordination with their arms and legs but also at the same time help with their cardiovascular fitness. Envision a large scale circle made by cones, I will have separate colored cones that represent different times/time zones/places, etc/ The students will meet at the center. The staff will then call out a time in order to begin and the students will perform a locomotor skill to the appropriate Time Station/Time Zone, etc. As for the social studies topic we will be talking more about time zones and how on November 18, 1883, America's Railroads began to use a type of standard time system that involved time zones, such as Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific. I am  pretty sure that we have all seen commercials on our upcoming favorite show which show dates as well as time zones, etc. Also, we will share quick facts about other countries and their time zones.

Math allows us to make sense of our world. When students see the power and joy in mathematics—not just the steps—they can use math knowledge and problem-solving skills to build the lives they dream about. This isn't just about numbers; it's about empowering students to build their mathematical thinking skills. Masters Program required post: Integrating project-based learning across math, physical education, and social studies offers a holistic educational strategy, especially for 2nd graders. By blending math with physical education, we engage students in practical exercises that enhance both physical and academic skills—like measuring distances in physical activities—to apply math in a fun, real-world context. Similarly, integrating math with social studies allows students to use mathematical skills to explore history and geography, making learning more relevant and applicable. An example lesson could combine math standards with a historical exploration of explorers’ routes, incorporating both calculations and physical activities to simulate these journeys. This interdisciplinary approach not only meets California's educational standards but also provides students with a comprehensive learning experience that connects academic knowledge with practical application, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of their lessons.

Nettle Nipping Maths Challenge! Something for my fellow teaching friends here: One of our favourite activities to do with young people is to show them the wonders of what is around them that they can eat, use or is a medicine/poison. It really opens their eyes to being able to spot useful things in nature – so that they can then apply this lesson to all other areas of their lives to spot opportunities and possibilities. Maths is a part of everyday life. Helping students to put their maths skills into practice can be really fun. Especially when it gives them a confidence boost to realise that they can do it! Our nettle nipping challenge combines the thrill of courting danger to pick without getting stung with the challenge of calculating how much you would need to get enough calories for the day. We give you a standalone activity to introduce the common stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) alongside calculations, weighing and measuring. Comment "Nettle" below and I'll send you the PDF.

Walk into most elementary math classrooms, and what do you see?  Containers filled with colorful manipulatives like attribute pieces, coins, clocks, fraction bars, and geometric shapes.  Wonderful tools that help students to make the leap from concrete play and exploration to abstract mathematical concepts.    Walk into most secondary math classrooms…where are those same wonderful tools to allow students to explore the concrete in order to understand the abstract?  Secondary students need the hands-on experience just as much as elementary students do.
